KPTV 4 pm Show Reaction Thread

Submitted by LynnS on Tue, 02/26/2008 - 3:12pm.

I totally missed the debut of the 4 pm yesterday; I was out of the house. I'll be watching this afternoon. But for those of you who did catch it, what did you think?

Its was interesting. Looks like Shauna and Wayne spit the hour with Kim. I was watching on Comcast HD, and they had issues with the size and picture coming over the digital version. They changed sizes at least five times in the first few minutes.

It looked a lot like their 10PM newscast - crime, crime, crime, weather, crime, crime, crime. I'm not sure how that type of newscast will play so early in the day. I found it interesting that they pulled Kim from GDO 5-7AM during last few days of book. Either this 4PM show means a lot to KPTV or they've raised the white flag and surrendered to KGW. I guess KPTV couldn't have caught up anyway with only a few days left.

whimper.

I was pleasantly surprised. It's much better than I had expected. My fear was a program heavy on light news or fluff but instead, it's largely hard news/breaking news fare. It'll give KATU a run for its money at the 4pm hour.

I missed it too but watched part of it online. It's definitely a fab KPTV newscast and they'll probably stick with the crime-like packages so they can stay consistent with the 10 and 11.

One thing I thought was interesting was Kim's wardrobe, I thought she was under dressed compared to Shauna. That works for her on Better and Good Day Oregon but it seems like she was pretty casual. Thoughts?

How does this work with KPTV staff, are there hours changed at all? Since they usually have up until 10 to get prepped for the 10, how does it work now with only an hour or two to get ready for the 4PM? Are all of them getting into work earlier now? Afternoon meeting time? Are packages going to be re-written or reused for the later shows?

Looks like the party is over at KPTV. Ouch! Smacked down hard by 15th and Jefferson crew in the hotly contested morning news race.

As of this morning KGW has a 4.7 rating for the book. That is up from a 4.3 for February 2007

KATU has a 2.3 compared to a 2.1 for last year

The Biggest Loser KPTV a 4.2 rating for February 2008, that's down from a 4.4 in 2007.

Every station in the market, even poor old KOIN saw growth in the morning news segment except 12, they lost viewers.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 02/27/2008 - 4:45pm.

needed to win mornings, to make up for their smack down in late night news. What's going on over there? The late night numbers have got to be getting them down. Or do they only choose to focus on their slight wins?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 02/28/2008 - 1:35pm.

A smack down in late night news??? Last time I looked KGW beat 2, 6 and 12 at 11:00, the only time all four stations go head to head. How anyone can compare 10:00 numbers to 11:00 numbers is way beyond me. Obviously people tend to go to bed around those hours, HUTs tend to go down. Comparing those numbers is ignorant. Its like comparing KPTV's 5 am numbers to KGW's 6 am. Not even close right. Head to head, KGW wins again.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 02/27/2008 - 6:38pm.

You're saying the Party is over because KPTV lost 2 tenths of a point?

OK.. just trying to be clear.

I can see through your crap, but I just hope others can too. I have to admit it's good to see KGW crowing about the morning numbers again. Just one question.. where have you been the last year?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 02/27/2008 - 8:02pm.

That is your ONLY job. Don't screw-up what others before you have built at KPTV. We were on a roll when you took over. What are you doing?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 02/28/2008 - 12:19pm.

"We were on a roll when you took over..."

Obviously this person works in Beaverton at the station. I think it's pathetic you say it like that on this public website. Why don't you just go into his office and say it to his face? And if you think you can do better then speak up.

I also find it odd that Patrick's and other ND/managements memos are frequently sent out of the office and published on here. Where gossip is gossip that's ok, but I would be upset if every time I wrote a memo to my colleagues it was made so public.

Submitted by LynnS on Fri, 02/29/2008 - 10:50am.

Memos are leaked all the time. It's called "news." If you look at a newspaper you'll often see emails, memos, documents, etc published that were not intended for a wider audience. I'm not saying that the memos I publish here are the equivalent of the Pentagon Papers, but--well, I guess I am. They are, in a much, much, much less important way.

I've only heard from one ND on this issue, who was, ironically, Patrick himself. We were face to face, in fact, and he sorta shrugged and went "that's showbiz." Paraphrasing, of course. Indirectly, I've heard that Rod over at KGW just expects that stuff will show up here eventually. And of course I've heard from KOIN's lawyers from time to time, though that was a while and an ND ago.

What does a 4.7 vs 4.2 rating/book mean in real numbers? Ie. number of viewers, percent of market share? Something? I just want to be able to equate it to some sort of tangible result. Cause it seems to me, in this context, .5 rating difference isn't that great of a 'smack down'. It just looks like a statistical lead. What's the greater meaning? I'm not trying to be cross, just trying to equate it with something?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 02/28/2008 - 7:12pm.

KGW won 5-6 with a 2.3 in Feb 07, and won it again with a 2.3 in 08, despite staying flat.
KPTV had a 2.0 5-6 in 07, and a 1.9 in 08. a-.1 difference
KGW 6-7 went from a 4.3 in 07 to a 4.7 in 07. a .4 gain
KPTV went from a 4.5 from 6-7 to a 4.2. -.3 difference
KPTV was up .3 from 7-9 despite gains by the Today Show.
I'm not including the 4:30s because KGW didn't have one last year, but it has apparently helped them.

So, would I like to win every book? Absolutely. Is this is a "smack down?" Absolutely not. But congratulations to KGW. When people were having kittens about our victory party last May, I said we'd be big enough to tip our hats to 8 when they won. You won, we lost and the party is far from over. And no, I'm not Patrick. See you in May.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 02/29/2008 - 10:53am.

Is KPTV trending down or was February just a fluke?
There are a lot of questions. Is the Drew Carney factor finally kicking in for KGW? Will removing Kim from 5-7AM hurt KPTV or will Julie provide a new spark to the anchor team and actually improve ratings? Will KPTV give viewers more vegan strip clubs or will Joe V. be kept on a shorter leash? May will be the last book before KGW moves downtown. Will another station try to match this ambitious effort or wait and see if a PSC studio makes any difference? So many things to ponder and just 2 months until we all battle it out again. See you in May!

One station shows a slight upsurge while KPTV trends down a tick and "The Party's Over?"

I'm not in that market and have never seen any of the newscasts you've mentioned. I have, however, been reading numbers and watching trends for decades and what you're looking at is every bit as likely to be a meaningless blip as it is the sign of a party ending.

You're either young and don't know better or experienced and a bit naive. Show me a trend before we talk about the fat lady singing.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 02/28/2008 - 10:34am.

I can't imagine posting here about a newscast I've never seen, in a market where I don't live but since you feel comfortable doing that -- let me offer some background on what's happening in Portland. I'm not the original poster but I don't want he/she to look "a bit naive"

KPTV has been trending up for several years now. They overtook longtime leader KGW in the morning news race a few years back. It's been back and forth ever since with KPTV winning most times but KGW sneaking in a victory here and there.

This is the first rating book in recent memory where KPTV lost in a clean sweep TO KGW. It's even more interesting that KPTV is down year-to-year at 5AM and 6AM when all the other stations are up as the morning audience continues to grow. KPTV is not down much but it reverses a trend that been going on for several years. I think that's what the original poster was trying to say.

Now -- anonymous 5:43PM.. Where do you live so I can offer some uninformed opinions about your city's news?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 02/28/2008 - 1:12am.

One thing your missing...and it is the bottom line...

MONEY>

KPTV is doing all this with what they have...

NO new expenses.

I know for a fact that the live trucks have over 200K miles on them.

Yet they run, they are reliable.... and heck, I saw them pull a DIGITAL ENG transmitter out the other day.

Bottom line... Do more with what you got.... equals more profit.

and not a little, but a LOT of credit goes to ED Williams and the current Engineering Crew...

Patrick says I want this... and they say, it's already done.... that's the way to run a business.

Winner for each time period is first.
Number in parenthesis is change from last February.

5-6am:
KGW 2.3 (=)
KPTV 1.9 (-.1)
KATU 1.1 (+.1)
KOIN .9 (+.2)

6-7am:
KGW 4.7 (+.4)
KPTV 4.2 (-.3)
KATU 2.4 (+.3)
KOIN 1.3 (+.2)

Noon:
KGW 3.0 (-.4)
KOIN 2.4 (+1.9)
KATU 1.9 (+.3)

5pm:
KGW 10.3 (+1.0)
KATU 5.2 (=)
KOIN 4.4 (+.6)

6pm:
KGW 8.5 (-.7)
KOIN 5.4 (+.9)

6:30pm:
KGW 6.8 (-.5)
KATU 5.5 (=)

10pm
KPTV 7.2 (-.1)
KRCW 1.7 (+.2)

11pm
KGW 5.3 (-.7)
KOIN 4.5 (-.3)
KATU 4.1 (-.1)
KPTV 2.8 (-.5)

KGW is still clearly the news leader in Portland, although 11pm has become a tighter contest with everyone continuing to lose viewers. KOIN has stopped it's bleeding, gaining in every newscast except 11pm. The abysmal performance of KGW's 10pm show hasn't changed. I haven't looked at the noon show ratings for several years. Do any of them make money with such low ratings?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 02/29/2008 - 6:20am.

I think that GDO will now flop with Kim no longer there. And that will be a real shame.
Pat should have put Julie on the 4pm news, and left Kim on GDO.
I put they start pulling others off GDO, like Andy Carson because he's on less & less.

I as just a viewer can tell that KPTV will loose their reign on Mornings.
Which is sad, cause its such a good show.

What happens if 4pm news flops, will kim be moving on to another station. OR will they can
Julie.

Just a viewer.

Submitted by bigboy on Fri, 02/29/2008 - 6:02pm.

I would be surprised if GDO sees a blip in its ratings due to Kim's scaled back duties on the show, and that's not a knock on Kim.

Like any good morning show, GDO is a formula where people can be plugged in and out of roles without much of a hit to the overall show. The formula is more important than any of the discrete parts (with the possible exception of Andy).

No one sits down and watches significant chunks of a morning show anyway. I bet most people have not even noticed that Kim no longer does the early hours - it's just a slightly different female voice they hear as they're eating their Rice Krispies.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 02/29/2008 - 8:43pm.

I've worked in TV news a long time in several markets and I have to disagree. A good morning newscast relies on chemistry. Take away an important part of the team and you risk upsetting that chemistry. I suspect it will take a while for Julie to fit in completely, if it ever happens. If KPTV slips further in the ratings, it will happen because viewers no longer feel that strong connection to the anchor team. Most viewers can't even tell you why they've switched channels but suddenly they've sampled another station and found it more appealing. I've seen it happen in other places but usually because a popular anchor has moved on to a bigger market. You don't normally see a station risk a successful show by moving a popular anchor to another newscast. I'm guessing KPTV's management is either inexperienced and doesn't understand what it's done or Kim simply refused to keep working the early shift so they did what was required to keep her at KPTV. Just one person's opinion.

Julie Grauert. Yum! I'll get up early to watch. Respect her for her mind? Absolutely. Intelligence and professionalism. Certainly.

And...oh, HELL YEAH!

No one sits down and watches significant chunks of a morning show anyway. >>I DO
I bet most people have not even noticed that Kim no longer does the early hours - it's just a slightly different female voice they hear as they're eating their Rice Krispies. >> I pay more attention by who's on the desk. Much like KOIN, when they Fired Mike & Shirley from the anchor desk, I quit watching KOIN totally, now with Jeff Granola, and Kelly Dolly there I will not watch amateur news.

As a viewer & listener, I am loyal until they make dumb changes. GDO loosing kim, I'll watch for a while, IF Pat cuts another's I will go to KGW. I have been watch GDO for 10 yrs, if they keep screwing it up. I am gone.

Ya, Julie is nice looking, but well see if she keeps wife & my attention.

PAT, Don't lose your steady audience.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 02/29/2008 - 10:11pm.

This is not a demotion for Kim. Kim wanted off the early morning. She couldn't take getting up at 2am anymore. Can you blame her? It was start her later as she wished, or lose her all together. Sometimes, you make the best of the cards you are dealt.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 03/01/2008 - 2:47pm.

How can she be expected to head into work without any sleep?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 03/01/2008 - 7:31am.

No I can't blame her,
but the way that TV & Radio Media management kills or moves people thats what it seems like.
BAM today was your last day, bye bye.

Seems like that Pat is also working Andy Carson out the door, he's on air less & less.
And Drew more & more. Is Andy on the cutting block ??

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 03/02/2008 - 1:31am.

Andy is the franchise along with Tony. They are both locked up with long term contracts. Drew is a really good talent who is frankly too good for weekends. He was brought on weekdays to help Andy prepare the graphics so Andy could come in a little later and go out in the field more. Now unfortunately Drew is heading back to weekends for a while until they replace Sophie who was doing weekend weather mornings who's now doing weekend anchor nights. It's all so confusing. Before you ask, yes they love Pete too.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 03/01/2008 - 7:41pm.

Yep, she was tired of getting up so early. Change her shift or risk losing her, physically or mentally.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 03/02/2008 - 6:51am.

So are they trying to can Andy, because he's not on much anymore.

I don't think I could work in the Media Industry.

I see your point about Kim, I just hope that they don't do much changing.
To many changes and KPTV will lose alot of Loyal Viewers, like US.
I don't listen to KUPL after they fired Susan Barr, then Amy King.
I don't watch NOR care for KOIN after they canned Mike & Shirley.

I just hope Pat takes US into mind as he tweaks & adjusts GDO.

I'm just a Viewer.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 03/02/2008 - 11:25am.

Drew Jackson is a remarkable on air and with his multiple degrees and experience has more knowledge than most at KPTV and Portland. It's a shame they keep switching him around...weekend nights, weekend mornings, weekday mornings, etc. I suggest giving him a set time on GDO that views and he can get used to. He's great and KPTV is lucky to have such fantastic talent, including the other four men and women they have in weather over there.

Submitted by bigboy on Wed, 03/05/2008 - 5:06pm.

At some point, I bet he lands with a steady weekday gig even if it's not KPTV. As someone up the string pointed out, he's too good to be doing anything less for much longer.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 03/05/2008 - 6:28pm.

I totally agree. Drew is an extremely knowledgeable weatherman and a terrific personality so it's such a shame that KPTV can't keep his schedule consistent. He could easily be a chief meteorologist at any other station (and not just in this market).

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 03/05/2008 - 6:34pm.

I'm surprised you noticed Drew since nobody sits down and watches a significant chunk of the morning show anyway. Remember... it's just a formula. Drew can be plugged in or out like anybody else on the anchor desk.

Submitted by bigboy on Thu, 03/06/2008 - 1:14pm.

Research clearly shows that most people sit down for long periods of time and watch morning shows rather than get ready for work and get the kids ready for school.

Also, GDO does not follow a formula and taking Kim out of the mix will clearly lead to the show's ratings downfall.

How could I have been so stupid.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 03/06/2008 - 12:28pm.

I doubt that we'll see any major changes in ratings for GDO with Kim's move, I agree with 8:40 above..people have it on in the background while brushing their teeth, or getting the kids ready for school.

Personally, GDO is the right 'flavor' of news for me in the morning, and when I watch (post 7 a.m.) Kim is on anyway. I really think Pete, Andy and Tony are the keystones of that show.

Question. With Julie coming in so early, does she stick around for the new 4pm newscast? Or are her duties strictly to anchor the 5-7am GDO, then she gets to go home and back to bed?

I don't watch any of the other KPTV newscasts, I can't stand the 10 o' clock 'reduced mental capacity and attention-span' news (As far as I'm concerned, it's the yuckiest flavor of news). My thing is, I like the people on the newscasts, but I HATE the newscast itself..make sense?
