KVAL: New ND Kuglin

Submitted by LynnS on Wed, 02/27/2008 - 4:09pm.

Got a note today that KVAL has a new ND: Jennifer Kuglin, out of NW Cable News. All I know about her is what I can google. Googlin' Kuglin (oh come on, would YOU have resisted?), we get this, from Medialine:

[Kuglin] has been named ND for this Fisher-owned CBS affiliate. She's been working as an EP for Northwest Cable News in Seattle, but before that was ND at KECI-TV in Missoula, MT, where she began as a technical director and worked her way up, eventually becoming ND. At KVAL, she replaces DEANA REECE who left the station last October to become ND for WICS/WICD in Springfield/Champaign, IL.

And that's what I know.

I just thought I'd say she did excellent work at NWCN and will be missed!

I graduated with Jenny at the University of Montana. She's a hard worker and knows her stuff. Congrats Jenny!

KVAL is loving the new attitude that Jenny has brought to the newsroom! A major improvement over the oppressive, negative environment that existed before with you-know-who. Folks there are happier, and it sounds like morale is shooting through the roof! Keep it up Jenny!

I'm surprised to hear that given how there's almost no talk about KVAL here. Seems most of the Eugene bitching is about KEZI.

Jenny's in the newsroom now and we're loving her. If it changes you'll find out.

KEZI sucks and will continue to suck. Mean owners + mean GM + mean news director = unhappy employees. And they say I got into TV because I couldn't do math...

From what I hear things weren't and are not bad there. The old ND was really negative and was not liked-by anyone. Sounds like a happier place now.

Having worked with both "you know who" and KVALs new ND, I'd take 5 years of "you know who" over 5 minutes of the new ND in a heartbeat.

Don't know where the hearsay of negativity comes from, but KVAL had a strong news team with great hires and an unmatched product in the market because of "you know who."

Ha! Yeah right! What a joke. I think there are at least ZERO other people there who feel that way. You are definitely the minority.

"I think there are at least ZERO other people there who feel that way."

Thinking was your first mistake. You should KNOW what you're talking about. I do. And I guarantee you, I'm in the Majority. Especially with those who have experienced working a long while with both Reece and Kuglin.

We do KNOW what we're talking about. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out who has the better people skills, management style, and vision for on air product. DR was holding kval back and was not a team player. Jenny knows what management wants. If you want something different, you are probably not in the long term plans. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Guarantee? I guarantee you may not be there much longer if you keep up that attitude.

Why don't you save us all the trouble and just follow DR if you like her sarcastic, insensitive style so much. And don't be jealous that kval finally has a real person to lead the newsroom.

How long have you been at KVAL? And how long did you work with Reece? Kuglin has been there a month tops. Also, who cares what Management wants? Your product should be about your viewers and what they expect. And if you think you'll find plenty of "people skills" within the news industry once you keep moving up the markets, then maybe you may want to find another gig.

Again, I'd follow Reece way before I'd look to work with Kuglin again. At least Reece is up front about her attitude. Just wait another month or so, then get back to me. I'm glad KVAL has found someone because I love the station and it and Reece have helped further my career far and quickly, but I feel bad it had to settle.

I worked with Kuglin before. I'll back up the people that says she kicks ass. She is a fine journalist and a true leader. Don't believe me? Fine, she has a nice long list of awards to prove it. I'll let you in on something else. Jenny doesn't have time for non-hackers that can't (or won't) get with the program. She is the one calling the shots now, while you are sitting there bitching and moaning that she is different from your last ND. Boo-hoo. If you can't adapt than you should either move on or get used to being unhappy. This may come as a shock to you, but in the real world things don't go your way. That must really suck for you. Trust me, your station didn't settle. They are lucky to have her and you should try to appreciate what you have there. Sounds like plenty of others there think she is a hell of an investment.
