It's not a bad thing ... overall they needed something to change, because navigation was a pain and I could watch none of the video, even though my OS (Mac OS X 10.4.11) and my browsers and plugins (FF, Safari, &c) were the latest versions.

The look of the KATU website has also changed, though the changes are a bit more subtle. One minus point for me is that they've taken the new Flag 2 logo off the header (I am sad because as I've gushed before, I'm really in love with that logo). But also there's more use of flat color gradients (and a representative color for each tab – Weather's header is green, for instance) and the faces of the news staff have disappeared from the header images completely.

I've noticed a particular "tight angle" on the news set during broadcasts without much variation. Suppose maybe they're working on upgrading that studio for HD?

Well, they are using a temporary set right now. They are currently installing a new one.

Katu's website has been that way for months now. same with komo and it really makes it look ugly.

The set is a temporary one. I like how they change the background from day to night. Hope they have that in the new one. but i hope they have the same background just change it to night. i also noticed the right side being tight and seeing black

Few trivia notes:

If you ever watch the reports or even the tv ads from the news room, you may sometimes see some wood in the background. thats because the weather center is actully in the news room. Before it was in the actual studio

KATu last updatied their set back in april 2002 as well as the old graphics to then one we had before hand. that set took a day to complete. mostly getting rid of the "glass windows" and putting up new pannels. this one is bigger and may not feature just a desk.

Anyone notice in some recent katu tv ads you can hear some power tools? I also noticed on a ad that Thrurten was doing some work being done off to her left. perhaps the new studio

Hey... same for KATU - is this like a race or something? KATU's studio is going to be huge! Did anyone catch their little impromptu tour they gave last week? They showed it all wiped out and the AM Northwest set entirely gone... which leads me to my next questions. A)Where is AM Northwest broadcasting from right now...and B)Where WILL they be broadcasting from once the studio renovation-ish construction is done? Are they taking over the newsdesk space? Eh?

Submitted by .Chris on Fri, 03/14/2008 - 11:25pm.

AM northwest has been moved to a smaller studio. i think its using the same as the one they did town hall in. they been reporting from there for over a month. The AM northwest studio is up and running. Though it does use a lot of the old set, like the windows. but there is new paint and the forest has been replaced with the city and the waterfront. The news set will take over the entire studio floor. whitch may have a CNN/ GMA type of fell. plasmas, news "centers"

katu should set up a fan site or history site

any one notice the AMNW set and even the temp. news set have a color hue thats more mellow rather then bright and blueish

Studio B originally was the News set. Other productions and commercials were shot in studio A, which had access to the outside through the garage. We used to drive cars into the studio and that is where we used to shoot the car dealer commercials before they started shooting on site. It is also where we always did AMNW, other local shows and Town Hall.

When we moved the news set out of studio B into the recent news set in Studio A, AMNW was on one side and the news on the opposite side. The occasional town hall and Friday night sports extra moved into Studio B. Telethons and other stuff also were done out of Studio B, which is the smaller of the two.

AMNW moved into studio B a month ago and news is also temporarily in there so it is currently crowded. Studio A has been completely stripped and being redone and will be the news studio. AMNW will stay in Studio B.

Studio C was created for Faces and Places and at its demise became the commercial production studio. It is now used for uplinks for Fisher.

And the rest is history, as they say. So, stop speculating. HD??? What is that?

HD = High Definition. KATU will get it sooner or later. its common sense

Apparently it's breaking news...

I like it. I very nice update. The video could be a little better in quality though and bigger. It has a nice search function in the player.

KATU did a real nice investigative piece tonight on a travel scam. Chased the guy down and busted him in the parking lot. Pretty uncharacteristically strong, in a market that features a lot of official sound bites and surprised neighbors.

March 7 newspaper headline: Travelers say club took them for ride

The print story, copied by KATU, cites the complaints to the A.G.'s office and quotes the owner whose employee sent the threatening email to a complaining customer. Not exactly a KATU exclusive.

since that is what they LOVE to do.

That was some good work. It was actually a follow up to a story they did a week or so ago about that travel company. The O did a story on it as well a few days after the first KATU story aired.

KATU broke that story. Jensen's been doing it for several weeks. What you saw was a follow up.

This is just another example of how Thom Jensen is clearly the best investigative journalist in town. Other stations may try to appear as if they have an investigative unit, but Thom is the only one who gets it done!

I love the way they started with how they ran them out of town ...

... bulldog consumer reporting. That's just the way it should be!

Why does the O get credit for everything?
KATU broke the gtravel story fair and square, The Oregonian signed on, with every other station a few days later.

I don't usually read this, but I did tonight for some reason.

Actually, to be fair, the Oregonian was working on the travel scam story longer than I was. We just got it on first.

Numerous people I talked with, who were scammed, told me they had already been contacted by the Oregonian reporter.

I also noticed she was blogging for contacts weeks before I was.

KOIN has also posted a job opening for a reporter. Anyone have any idea what that would pay? How does the pay compare with reporters at KATU, KGW, AND KPTV?
