Meta: Fairy Blogmother Attending OAP Broadcast Shindig 4/5/08

Submitted by LynnS on Sun, 03/16/2008 - 4:32pm.

For some ungodly reason, I've been invited as a panelist to the Oregon AP Broadcast awards in Newport on April 5th, and barring unforeseen troubles will be going to the awards banquet that night. note to self: must find old magic wand...

Cablenut will be escorting me, the Nutlings safely squirreled away elsewhere, and I thought we should have a meet-up of some kind there, no? I'm on the 10:30 am Saturday panel, and we'll be there the night before. I haven't seen a schedule of events yet, so we may have to play it by ear, though I'm thinking we take over the jacuzzi on Friday night. I know at least that's the 'Nut's plan, though the sight of me in a bathing suit may be a bit much for anyone who's not married to me, so I'm totally open to suggestions that don't involve swim suits.

Um. That came out wrong.

Any suggestions?

The reason you haven't heard about it here is because FOX12 didn't win much. The kids would be bragging a bunch had they done better. BTW, The big awards (Best newscast, etc) are announced at the event.

Submitted by TV Weather Producer on Mon, 03/17/2008 - 5:26pm.

Most of the awards have already been sent across the wire. Only the big awards will be announced at the convention.

FYI, even though most of the awards are posted on the wire ahead of time, they still make you sit through all of them at the dinner-- radio and tv, along with clips of each of the first-place winners.
And Lynn, I'm glad to hear they brought back the Saturday workshops. The last few years they did away with that feature because of a lack of participation -- even though that was always my favorite part.

Best part of the awards?

KEZI's news director forgot to submit entries. Apparently he was too busy hiring people to fill empty positions.

Not a single AP award for KEZI. Not even a third place.

Wow.

The bigger question is whether a pile of plaques or certificates translates into higher ratings. Anyone have hard numbers on that?

Submitted by Tv_Viewer on Tue, 03/18/2008 - 9:21am.

Can someone post a link or a list.

Did KOIN pull a KEZI and forget to submit any material? I don't see the Big 6 mentioned anywhere?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 03/19/2008 - 12:27pm.

...but I find it kind of funny that the copyright notice was left in a post that probably violates the copyright.

This has fallen off my radar in the past several years. Given my new job, I was thinking of connecting.
My memory of the AP events goes back 20 years when it was a 2-3 day mid-week party, seminar.
What is the status now?

Submitted by JimL on Wed, 03/19/2008 - 3:41pm.

It appears they're not on the list, either. Gads!

Submitted by LynnS on Wed, 03/19/2008 - 7:47pm.

that person said that no one submitted anything.

when the station wont pay for, coordinate, or help out in any way what incentive is there for the indiviual employeee to pony up money to enter a contest? especially when they are concerned over management/ownership changes and job stability. hello koin? That contest is meaningless. Are you telling me there wasn't even enough quality entries to even award a 3rd or second place in some categories? hang that on your mantle with pride boys and girls...call the promo department asap.

Does it really mean only two entries were made in a certain category if only first and second place awards are given? I've heard two different answers and I'm curious.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 03/21/2008 - 9:09am.

We were told to award 1st and 2nd if there are four entries or less in a catagory, OR, if we felt that the pool of entries didn't meet the level of quality the catagory required. Sometimes you will see just a 1st place, but that meant only one entry was any good out of all that were entered. You will also notice (even in the regional Emmy's) more than one 1st place winner sometimes. That means that 2 or more stories were of excellent quality.

Submitted by TV Weather Producer on Fri, 03/21/2008 - 12:48pm.

The AP doesn't always issue a second or third place winner. I've submitted entries for a former employer and I know for a fact that we would submit multiple submissions for one award and we weren't surprised when only a first or second place award was listed. Sometimes, if the pieces are bad, no winner will be picked. It all depends on who is listening and judging. AP doesn't pick the winner, a different group of journalists from another city are the people who chose the winners.

When do we get the nominee list for the 2008 Northwest Emmys?
