Brave New Media Conference

Journos who want to learn something about all this wacky new media stuff are encouraged to attend the Brave New Media World conference this weekend in Portland, put on by SPJ. Our correspondent Nick Budnick says:

Attendees will harvest career tips, learn "New Media" skills and computer-aided reporting as well as hone their writing, interviewing and investigative techniques. On top of that, they will be equipped with tools to cover business and decipher the dark side of "sustainability." ...

The event features numerous crackerjack speakers, including nationally-known journalists like Rebecca Clarren of Salon, top-notch editors like writing guru Jack Hart of The Oregonian, other experts, and, in an encore performance, top gumshoe Les Zaitz of The Oregonian, who received rave reviews for last fall's Eugene training. There will also be a rare Pacific Northwest appearance by reporting guru Don Ray, who travels the world teaching journalists and cops the art of finding out stuff. From personal experience, Don's lessons are entertaining, interactive and memorable. With useful concepts designed to change the way you think, his teachings should pay off immediately.

What on earth is the "dark side of sustainability"?

And what is Nick Dudnick's relationship to the conference. His comments quoted above read like a junior high assembly press release, more likely to send me screaming for the door rather than hankering to attend.

LOCAL SPJ needs better PR. I would have loved to have known about this prior to the day before. It sounds great. Now I'm left scrambling to rearrange my Saturday.

Hey don't fault the conference for my poor attempt at writing.

Most of the action will take place tomorrow. Details are here:

You can find out more about the sustainability panel there, too.

My guess about the "dark side of 'sustainability" is that it involves things like certain biofuels that do not benefit the environment and cost taxpayers billions.

We do have trouble reaching people through SPJ, but not because we don't try. We've emailed every newsroom in the state about BNMW and sent postcards and posters to newsrooms for weeks. Trouble is, things get lost in the shuffle. All SPJ members are on our direct mailing list. Anybody interested in adding on can contact me on my personal email: lvdvoo@hotmail.com.

I'm a member of SPJ and I learned about this event from Oregon Media Insiders. This is just the latest example of poorly publicized SPJ events in Oregon. At least let the membership know about upcoming events. C'mon folks! These things aren't supposed to be covert events.

When I arrived in Portland in 2005, I called and emailed multiple SPJ members seeking to get involved with the local chapter as I'd been with my previous SPJ chapter, but couldn't get a response for anyone -- so I what should I expect when it comes to events?

If you're a member of SPJ and did not receive notice in advance of the conference, please email your name and address to me. As a member of the SPJ board, I'll make sure you receive notice before future events.

As Lee noted, we mailed postcards to all SPJ members prior to this year's event. We also sent fliers to every newsroom in the state. I apologize if you didn't receive notice.

Sorry you've had trouble. Trust me when I say that we do our best. Our board of volunteers puts in an incredible amount of time and energy into events and it certainly is not our intention to lower their attendance. Like I said, anyone can reach me on my personal email to add to SPJ's mailing list. If you still want to be involved, please use the email: lvdvoo@hotmail.com.
