Weekend Open Thread, Stoned Cablenut Edition 4/11/08-4/13/08

Submitted by LynnS on Thu, 04/10/2008 - 11:52pm.

For those of you wondering if the kilted one made it through his tonsillectomy today, yes, he did, with flying colors. He's now stoned out of his van-dyked gourd, but generally in good spirits and doing much better than we expected.

You?

Glad Cablenut got through the surgery and hopes he continues to recover quickly.

Did he get ice cream, like Bill Cosby did on that album?

What's better:
The Murrow or the Emmy?

Submitted by ZehnKatzen on Wed, 04/16/2008 - 11:52am.

Speaking strictly as a news and tv consumer here, my impression is that each award speaks to different parts of the mission: the Emmy means you're winning for overall quality, and the Murrow means you're putting out solid news.

Being able to say both says you got one really slick operation there.

Yes, I realize that the awards are actually evaluated by and awarded by the broadcast literati. Still, it's a question of perception, not reality.

Murrow= journalsitic quality.
Emmy= production talent.
Both are important
Those who win both like KGW have quality in both areas.

Word in the KPTV newsroom that he is moving to New York City in May. Any confirmation?

To do what? If that's the case, good for him. I wish I had that kind of talent that young.

KATU has its own New York City rumor. I hear Anita Kisee is moving there.

I'm writing to thank you on behalf of the Belo management team. You've done a super job at cutting costs.
Your ability to accept layoffs in the last two yeasr with barely a whimper has helped me, I mean us, immensely. At KGW, Ron Pivo, Andrea Cantu, you're champs for sucking it up and losing your jobs.

2006 was a tough year but 2007 was even more difficult.
So tough in fact that my total compensation only doubled from its $5.7 million level in 2006.

$10.2 million seems a fair package to take home from last year's budgetary debacle. Now that Belo has split into 2 companies and I'm no longer in charge of the Broadcast division, I regret to say that the jobs you're going to lose this year won't help me at all. But I'm sure your new CEO will be as grateful next year as I am now.

(all figures come from Belo's just released annual report of Executive Compensation.)

but still grotesque! Being rewarded for leading a profitable company is great, but $10+ Million???

Check through the SEC filings for any publicly traded company that you (assuming you work in media) work for and you'll be disgusted at how much executives and board members make. And they make it even if the company isn't doing well.

Having left the Belo household some time ago, I find that I still have a small amount of Belo stock in an IRA account. That stock, as of this morning is lookin' very good thank you.. Tomorrow it may look very bad. Different every day but since the total is less than $100 I'll probably gamble and hang on to it for a while.
Wishing you KGW folks luck. Move your Belo stock to bonds or whatever.

Anyone know the names of some of the staff involved in those awards?

What happened to Jim Brinson over at KOHD?

Chambers this is you chance to bring back Keri Stewart. Maybe then you would get something besides a hashmark for your morning show.
