Helping a Portland Writer

Submitted by shawnlevy on Fri, 04/11/2008 - 4:18pm.

D.K. Holm, the Portland author and longtime film and book critic for Willamette Week and other print and internet publications, has found himself suffering a medical crisis without the protection of insurance. On April 27 at Cinema 21, several friends of his will be hosting a benefit to help give him a financial hand.

Details of the event -- and how to help if you can't attend -- can be found here: http://culturepulp.typepad.com/helpdkholm

The word you're looking for is 'mitzvah'.

Willamette Week doesn't provide health coverage???

DK is the *former* longtime book and film critic for WW: he hasn't worked there for about a decade, but he was there for something like 10-12 years before that. Until most recently, he was working at Powell's and freelancing and writing books. But when he left the book store to write full-time, he lost his coverage. And then he got ill.

Lots of details here: http://culturepulp.typepad.com/culturepulp/2008/04/dk-holm-could-u.html

One nice thing has happened: a dozen or so of the most influential film blogs and news sites on the web have taken up the call for help. Good to see a sense of community form, even if it takes something so dire to occasion it.

Reminder that the benefit for D. K. Holm is Sunday night at 6 pm at Cinema 21.
