I'll put my cards on the table right up front here; I am a fan of the Randi Rhodes, and what follows is perforce extremely personal opinion.
When I heard she was being suspended for remarks made in poor taste (but not on the air, and certainly no worse than some who get prominent air-time and endless passes for their behavior get (the gentle reader can compile their own lists)) I was dismayed, and when it happened that she was cashiered from Air America for those remarks, I was sorely disappointed.
Followers of the event have since learned (via a remarkably frank Randi who called in to Marc Maron (who was standing in for Mike Malloy on his NovaM program during a vacation break) that the event may well have been a power play on the part of Air America management to gain some leverage over her – from what we've heard on the air, AAR tried to get her to renegotiate her contract over it – that they did not have because Randi was one of AAR's biggest draws.
My eye all along has been how the POJ, which has gone a long way toward defining the "progressive talk" category, would handle this. We've always had the impression that Randi was one of the linchpins of the POJ lineup. When MIke Malloy disappeared from AAR, we endured a long dry spell and were quite thrilled with the way the POJ handled returning Mike to the lineup (we still would that he were on in PDX live, but apparently Mike is dominating the ratings in his time period, and we won't argue with success).
KPOJ has reacted, to be short, with admirable wit and aplomb. Randi, as reflected by the record, was picked up by NovaM even more quickly than she was dropped by AAR; she will be back on the air on Monday the 14th. Moreover, she will be back on the POJ as well.
As Loyal Listeners have been advised, Randi's program has been syndicated to KPOJ and will run in Randi's regular time spot, starting next Monday. Our Rhodian interregnum will be blessedly brief.
But what I have really found amusing (in the good way) is the way KPOJ has handled this awkward situation. The voice over the bumper music, almost from the first, changed, stating that this was "Not The Randi Rhodes Show ... for the time being". Randi Rhodes's rotator image on the KPOJ webpage was also suitably altered to reflect the reality:
It all adds up to a impression of a nimble, "hands-on" approach to a totally-out-of-left-field (no pun intended) situation that the POJ handled with wit and style, which this arrogant opiner must tip his cap to.
Well done, KPOJ.

Lemme get this straight...
A supposed lefty gets the axe for railing against another lefty?
1. She should have been more careful in her remarks.
2. Her audience (however few really became aware of what she said) would find her remarks in poor taste and running against her persona/on air antics.
3. I heard what she said and she's right.
4. It doesn't really matter now, you're happy and that is all that really matters to us all.
5. KPOJ is the uncola to Rush's cola.
6. Do these pants make me look fat?
