New Anchor for KATU

Submitted by JoshM79 on Wed, 04/16/2008 - 1:41pm.

Brian Wood from WMAR (Baltimore) will be the new 4PM anchor at KATU. He will begin on April 21st; perhaps that is when the new set is scheduled to debut. Any idea if KATU will also be updating their graphics package as well?

uh...KATU just received new graphics. I'm guessing that is the day they will debut the set.

Deborah Knapp also returns to the air that day.

I realize they just got new graphics, I am just curious if they will be tweaked at all :)

The graphics will remain mostly unchanged, but you will see more of them incorporated into the presentation. Weather will see the biggest change. Also, there will be more areas on the set for interaction with video and/or graphics.

Sounds instesting. Seems like if thats true, KATU will be the only station in town to have that formatt. How long has it been since the last weather graphic update? 8 years? I remember when KATU did their last major revamp in 2000 with the puzzle peace blue graphics thats also when they ditch the cartoon style weather graphics for the current one. So we may be seeing new maps, new title cards, new formatt. I hope we see more interaction with local nighbhoods and areas around the state. I also hope to see the 10 day trend making a come back. I dont see how it can be more acreate. You have 3 days less then before, nothing spechiel.

last time they tweaked their graphics they made it look horable, so horble they had to ditch the old for the current.....

I dont see how the current ones could be tweak its fine the way it is.. Best graphics package they ever had since the 1997-2000 "slanted box" graphics now those showed class...

Brian Wood will be a great addition to KATU. Brian worked at KIRO 7 in Seattle for many years before moving to Baltimore. I think that Portland viewers will really like Brian. He is an excellent anchor and reporter. I wonder though will Brian eventually anchor more than just the 4pm newscast?

What happened to Derek Sciba? His bio is missing from the KATU website. What happened, where is he off to?

I'm surprised his WMAR bio is still up. In case it gets taken down soon:

National award winning reporter and anchor Brian Wood is Anchor and Managing Editor of ABC 2 News at 5, 6 and 11:00.

Wood has more than 25 years of news and newsroom management experience. He’s stood his ground during earthquakes in Seattle, San Francisco and Kobe, Japan. He was in London for the funeral of Princess Diana. He covered the bombing in Oklahoma City, the crash of John F. Kennedy Junior’s plane near Martha’s Vineyard and the smuggling of illegal immigrants from Hong Kong.

Brian Wood earned the coveted National Peabody Award for his examination of the Columbia River. He has also been honored with multiple Emmy Awards for his anchoring and reporting, as well as honors from the Society of Professional Journalists, Associated Press, and others.

Wood is a graduate of the University of Washington with an honors degree in Political Science and Communications.

Wood is involved in the community offering support to the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, the House of Ruth and Maryland Food Bank.

He lives with his wife and family.

His Wikipedia page says he's a Washington native and KIRO alum.

A new anchor won't help KATU since it takes 10 years for viewers to even learn an anchor's name. KATU's emphasis on crime and the trivial will continue to mire it in low ratings. It's promos are the worst in the market. So a new set and a new anchor aren't going to help them.

I kind of agree that their promos arnt as good as some others. KGW over does it, The BEST # 1 NEWS CAST IN THE # 1 STATE or their promos they had for HD. almost every other word they said was "in HD"

This bio for wood is still on the WMAR website.

Apparently WMAR is "struggling" and Wood's contract was not renewed.

This is such great news. When he was at KIRO in Seattle, he did a great job both anchoring and reporting. I remember him on the weekends -- KIRO Sunday News Hour with Monica Hart and on the weekday 7pm broadcast. Again, Portland is VERY lucky to have Brian Wood.

Without a doubt, those credentials are fabulous. This just may help KATU. Now they need some updated promos/credentials and their back baby!

I worked with Brian at KIRO back in the day. He's a great guy.

From Seattle, is was Joe Feriea (sp?) and Sabrina Register. Or, are you thinking of John Marler and Cathy Marshall?

You may be thinking of John Seigenthaler and Kerry Brock who used to anchor for KOMO 4 in Seattle. Wiki Bio:

Former KOMO weekend anchor John Seigenthaler married former KOMO weekday anchor Kerry Brock in the early 1990's. According to Wikipedia, they are still married.

Speaking of John Marler and Cathy Marshall, I always felt he was a very good anchor and wasn't treated very well at KATU. He replaced the very popular Jeff Gianola -- and wasn't anything like him. Plus they had three anchors at the time -- Steve Dunn, Paul Linnman and John Marler. John Marler was more large market material, whereas Jeff Gianola was folksy/goofy. When Marler left KATU, their management seemed more interested in programming gimmickry than delivering a solid news product.

As for Cathy Marshall, KATU tried to morph her into Julie Emry. The most obvious sign of this was making her cut her hair to resemble Julie Emry. She wasn’t as good as her husband, but I did enjoy her on AM Northwest with Paul Linnman.

Speaking of which...now that Seigenthaler is out at NBC, might he return to local in the NW?

Is Kerry Brock still in the biz? Her sister is Kathy Brock, one of the primary anchors at ABC-7 (WLS) Chicago. Both of them started out in the Tri-Cities/Yakima if I'm not mistaken.

What about John Marler? What is he up to these days?

And pure rumor/speculation, might Fisher be grooming Brian Wood for an eventual return to his hometown in Seattle?

OK, I'm done with the questions for now.
