KOIN against three KGW shows for best newscast? Did KATU and KPTV forget to submit?

KPTV's Good Day Oregon was nominated in a best newscast category - but not in the evening category you cited, for obvious reasons.

I count:
KOIN - 2
KPTV - 10

Not sure what they do in other NW markets, but the announcements party in Seattle was great! We have a battle of the bands competition between the major TV stations and production houses in town. There's a lot of talented musicians working in TV!

Who nominates each category? For an example, I know one of the stories, Keely Chalmers was only around 30 minutes, asked around for her story and left. Where as a reporter for another station spent 3 hours researching and even reported live that day. How do I know? I live in the specific neighborhood in which I am referring and saw that person and station. Did KGW buy that nomination for Chalmers?

"Nominations" are a sham, actually. NATAS knows the winner in each category already.

Folks from other markets view all the entries and score them. Each entry above a certain score qualifies as a "nomination," and the highest score is the winner.

It does cost money for each entry -- sometimes the station picks up the tab, sometimes reporters enter on their own.

And as for 30 minutes vs. 3 hours: quantity doesn't necessarily equal quality. If you can shoot an award-winning story in a half hour, more power to you. It's also possible the story had other elements shot earlier or later in the day, and very likely the story had additional research done from the station. The phone is often a better tool than door knocking.

KATU debuted their new set today. What does everyone think?

It's also strange how a story can WIN a Murrow and not even be nominated for an Emmy. Really?

The December Storm specials on KGW were fantastic. If they don't win it is a travesty.

entering the awards long ago. After staying up all night preparing the entry, arguing with the ND for funds to enter, the cost of driving up to Seattle, hotel, dinner and then just getting a piece of paper saying I was nominated... not worth it. And then when you do win, it is the stations award.

Can you believe how incomplete the O's story was today on the Emmy nods?

They fail to mention how many nominations each station got. Makes it sound like all the stations were equal.

If they were reporting on their own nominations for major journalism awards they certainly would not have left that out.

Anyone else notice that Anna Song recognized with three Emmy nominations? If KGW was smart it would steal Ms Song from KATU the minute she becomes available. I watch a lot of local news, and there are some really talented people in this market, but if I'm starting a new station in Portland, she's the first reporter I hire.

Song is great. Others: Tomlinson, Thom Jensen, Kyle Iboshi.
