KATU: Katy Brown now?!

Submitted by LynnS on Wed, 04/23/2008 - 11:24am.

WWeek is reporting that KATU sports gal Katy Brown is in talks with Rose City Radio to do a sports show on 95.5. We've heard rumors of Jammin' flipping to sports for a while now. If these new rumors are true, Brown would be paired with former KFXX guy and Columbian sportswriter Ken Vance:

Neither would confirm they’re doing the new show, but neither denied it. “KATU is the only place I’m employed right now,” Brown says. Vance, now a reporter at The Reflector in Battle Ground, Wash., referred Murmurs to McNamara, who didn’t return a call.

Geez, KATU, last person out, turn out the lights or something...

Doing a 95.5 show wouldn't necessarily mean leaving KATU.

Colin Cowherd did both his radio and TV gigs simultaneously for years.

Katy Brown is no Colin Cowherd

She's not even in the same league as Colin Cowherd.

Thank God she isn't in the same league as Colin Cowherd. He is a no talent hack.

probably makes 10-20X your yearly salary.

that's why he makes nearly 800K a year at ESPN now! Colin Rocks!

Don't let the facts get in the way of your opinion.

Also, you might remember him telling his listeners to crash a blog (The Big Lead), which I considered to be nothing short of a denial of service attack. Not legally, of course, but he told his listeners to click and refresh to "crash" the site.

Quality guy there.

I don't make as much, probably because I actually site where I get my information.

did salary have some kind of karmic, irrefutable proportional parallel to skill and talent ???

Exhibit A: Katie Couric

"Talent" became so subjective in the TV and radio business. Salary may be the best way to judge someone's success and/or talent (along with longevity). Colin would not be heard on several hundred radio stations coast to coast and making huge money if he was untalented. Is Bill O'Reilly talented? Rush Limbaugh? The answer is yes. They are both very good in their niche and their paychecks prove it.

OMGWTF!!! This is like an apocalypse in local broadcast world! :~(

struck me as someone who has the personality to be a "radio personality"... this could be real bad.

I second that. She's totally unwatchable on tv. I will not listen to this show for 5 seconds. Wow! What a bad move.

I have no idea whether this rumor is true or not, but I hope it is.

Katy Brown is a talented professional. In my dealings with her over the years I have come to respect her work a great deal. I think she would be a great talk host.

Colin, as well, is a remarkabe talent. What is it that makes som folks want to tear down successful people?

I hope to see Katy over at Rose City Radio.

She was on KFXX at least once sitting in for someone, and I thought she did a pretty good job.

Not being Colin Cowherd is not neccessarily a bad thing.

The WW report was weak. I mean, how much work does it take to make a few simple calls? The only thing I learned from that report is how disconnected WW is from the media who cover the city? Are you telling me that the best WW could do is throw out a rumor and get a bunch of no-comments?

We all know this is going to happen. It's the worst-kept secret in the city. Katy Brown and Kenny Vance will move to 95.5, and the station flips to all-sports and Canzano's Baldie show will probably go to afternoon drive if 95.5 wants to win big

An all-local sports show vs. The Fan won't be close. 95.5 will win this going away. Then, WW will accuse Rose City Radio of discriminating against black radio stations or something ludicrious like that because it dropped the Playhouse.

I'm not surprised by the news here, I'm surprised that WW threw this out there without being able to connect a single dot. Jeezus do they do any reporting there?

I've got to agree about kicking The Fan's backside. I've listened to that station for 20 years and they've gone through some up and down cycles but they are now at absolute ROCK-BOTTOM. With the exception of Lance Fisher on Saturday mornings for 2 hours I can't stand listening. Colin is ok but I couldn't stand Dan Patrick and now Mike Tirico. Listening to them is like watching paint dry. Jim Rome although abrasive was okay but the local afternoon/evening show is brutal. Hasn't been anygood since Micheal Thompson and Kermit Washinton were on years ago. Now I'm not saying Katy is all that, but teamed with Kenny I think it will work. Although I don't always see eye to eye with Canzano...they'll crush Iassac and Big Suke. To have to watch them on Comcast now...I just can't do it!

Katy and Kenny will be terrific on the air there if this is true.

What a great mix. It's about time we got a female voice in the local sports radio. Kudos to Katy and KATU for recognizing the value of this crossover promotion.

I suppose there's a reason Rose City Radio would want to hire Katy Brown --- because she's good at what she does. There isn't another female sports voice in the market that is worth giving a show to. That's a testament to Katy's good work. I'll listen to her show if this is true. Now, is it true? Someone clear up the rumors.

Why do you care if a radio host is male or female?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 04/28/2008 - 7:53am.

Let's not forget that Katie first came to KATU as a meteorologist. What is her background as someone covering sports? Does she have any credibility?

Submitted by Marty (not verified) on Wed, 04/30/2008 - 4:06pm.

I don't know that she has all that much credibility. She did make it known up front that she wanted to do sports but frankly I felt she did a very poor job. Sports on KATU hasn't been good for quite some time nor has the weather. The anchors were the only thing that carried the station and that has dwindled as well. The only female sportscaster in all of sports that I've really liked was "Runnin" Ann Schotz. Some will bash her for her lifestyle but at least she wasn't window dressing or so clueless you could tell they were reading the teleprompter.

on the air here for about a decade and has made little or no impact. Katu has been third or fourth in the ratings during that entire time
