Obama Visit Thread

Obama HQ is just a couple of blocks away from OMI HQ, and so we've been watching with amusement as the ENG trucks and news vans have been circling the block looking for parking. One guy in an unmarked ENG truck was having such troubles with parking that Cablenut and I sat down with our coffees and watched him for a bit out in front of Pallino. Anyway, the oldest Nutling volunteers at Obama HQ. If you see a very pretty, very young volunteer (possibly in an orange bucket hat), stop and say hi.

This is your Obama visit open thread. Keep other topics in other open threads. kthxbye.

I'm hoping that my tiny (but well-respected!) suburban outpost newspaper gets one question in with The Second Coming, and wondering what that question's going to be?

Do I travel down the (already well worn) LNG path that is our #1 story?
Do I ask about transportation, which is probably #1 with our readers?
Do I nod to our agricultural industry and ask about immigration and strawberry prices?
Or do I go with the typical suburban news fluff and ask what color puppy he prefers?

You ask about the puppy. If you get a followup, find out if the puppy wears a flag pin.

I hear, and that makes me wonder--how often do presidential candidates --even in the primary--make it to Bend? Of course it's a far larger place now, but still--anybody know who the last candidate was?

I know Bobby Kennedy flew into The Dalles airport in 1968, which is pretty darned impressive, even now.

George W. and JFK both visited during their presidencies and now Bill Clinton after his presidency, but the previous poster might be right about the last time a candidate visited during a run for the White House.
BTW, tickets apparently were gone in an hour for Saturday's event. Seems Central Oregonians are a bit star-struck.

Heard Joe Donlon on Mark & Dave this afternoon. He said that he interviewed Obama for about 3 minutes and will do the same with McCain on Monday.

He also said that he got in trouble for telling a joke last night. Here is goes and keep in mind I'm doing this from memory but I laughed when he told it this afternoon: Obama & Clinton's planes were on the tarmac at PDX last night and you couldn't tell them apart: Joe said: oh that one is Obama's since Hillary is letting the air out of the tires. Joe said he got called in pretty much as soon as he got in today.

If I got it wrong then please feel free to correct me. I don't see anything wrong with it but I also have a sense of humor.

You have to understand that the News Director at KGW, while he may be a good news director, has absolutely no sense of humor.

Tell a joke to him or near him and you get a very blank look.

RFK made a daylong Eastern OR swing in '68 starting at Mike Thorne's Pendelton ranch in the a.m. and ending with a speech at THe Dalles Junior High. My Great Aunt, Margaret Flynn, a teacher who died in 1993, met him at the airport with several other local Dems and sat on the stage with him. They said he was exhausted and barely spoke in the car. He carried Wasco. County!

So it is Friday and the two Dem candidates are BOTH in Oregon campaigning for some of the last available delegates. First time in DECADES Oregon has mattered in a primary. And Fox12 leads its newscast with............ a scam going on in NE Portland. Huh???!!!
When isn't there some sort of scam going on in the area?

I understand if it bleeds it leads, but there wasn't any blood!
