KOIN: Stedman Gone

Submitted by LynnS on Tue, 05/20/2008 - 7:35am.

Teresa Stedman is out at KOIN. The (Saturday) memo from GM Chris Sehring:

The Director of Human Resources & News Operations position has been eliminated. This position’s former duties will be re-assigned to KOIN’s News and Business departments effective Monday, May 19th.

As a result of this change, Teresa Stedman has left KOIN to pursue new interests. All of us at KOIN appreciate her many efforts on behalf of our station; we thank Teresa for her hard work and wish her great success in her future endeavors.

KOIN is also combining the Promotion and Production departments into a Creative Services unit with Rodger O'Connor in charge. Rick Brown moves to Production Manager in that department.

Can't wait for the flood of comments on this one!

I always got along with her well, but I saw her treat others like crap and have heard lots of bad stories over the years.

To those who were fired in the last 8 years, since Emmis took over in 2000, she has been the "face" and executioner for the different corporate masters at KOIN.

How does that song go? Ding-dong...?
Seriously, KOIN employees can breathe a sigh of relief. No more passive-aggressive b.s.... Let's hope for her sake
that payback's more forgiving than she was.

I guess the come-uppins are appropriate... especially if a potential employer decides to google "Teresa Stedman" and reads about her far less than stellar record when it comes to dealing with co-workers.
I understand that she was probably directed to do some of the horrible things she did, but did she have to take so much joy in them?
The true character in her personality was how she did them, nose up in the air, smug attitude...
What goes around comes around... the karma created by her actions at KOIN could follow her around for many years, and would be very much deserved.

who would decide to base an employment decision on anonymous postings on a gossip blog is looking for a reason not to hire someone. In other words, the person wasn't getting the job in the first place. If you are a potential employer reading this site: Anything written by an anonymous poster is suspect. Heck, I'm willing to say anything written on this site by anyone is at least a little suspect.

Stedman is going to have a big wake up call if/when she finds a new management job -- most managers don't treat their employee's like crap! Yes, that's true Teresa! Good luck with the adjustment.

Can anyone give me a ballpark number of how many folks have left KOIN in the past three or four years?

By the sounds of previous posts, it doesn't look as if Ms. Stedman was held in the highest regard. It seems that companies these days hire human resource managers that have little concern for the welfare of the employee but rather the welfare of the company. Given all the changes at KOIN over the past few years, it'll be interesting to read and see what the long term holds.

The biggest misconception people have is that HR is there for the employees - it's not. HR is there to protect the Employer. Period. Probably why I got out!

"These days?" As opposed to when?!

To a varying degree, those of different generations have always persisted with this misunderstanding of the role and the allegiance of the "Human Resources Director". I am amazed that in these times there are employees who are still confused by the issue.

Same job - Different Title

In the 40's and 50's, factories called this person the Industrial Relations Manager. If you were a union member (more common in those days), you didn't really want to see this person. If it was a serious problem, they would summon you with what usually was bad news. Minor problems could be reported to your union steward.

If you were not a member of a union, or in an extremely low position like a (non-executive) secretary, you really didn't have many rights at all. You were almost universally at the mercy of your boss.

Well into the 60's and 70's, the bland "Personnel Director" title was in common use.

Sometime in the 1980's, a few emerging Silicon Valley companies tried to change the title of this job to Ombudsman. This gave the some employees that the Personnel Director was the "safe" person within the company to whom you could report problems that you were having with your boss such as perceived mistreatment, discrimination or harassment.

Many employees later learned that the corporate "sympathy" from the person with this title was only an illusion.

Also, during the 1980's, the job title "Human Resource Manager" became fashionable. It sounded much more politically correct (as opposed to axe man, corporate executioner, downsizing consultant, etc.)

Still it's pretty much a thankless job... boring... routine... very sad when you have to sit in the firings of close friends and stay businesslike and composed.

I worked at a couple of places long ago where HR (called "Personnel" back then) did a really good job working with their employees. Their concerns about employee welfare were legitimate -- or at least I thought so. Today thought, it's seems things have taken a 180 degree turn.

Wasn't Rick in charge of all things operations at one point? Including engineering, news photogs, news editors, and all of news production. Now he's in charge of a handful of directors?

...I guess Rick just showed he is a better cockroach than Teresa.

Who'd have thought it? KOIN beat KGW, KATU, and KPTV at 11. I hear they're popping the champagne at 6, and people at 8 are beside themselves, wondering how it could've happened. Can anyone confirm?

KOIN is running promos.

Rightly so.....

From a KOIN insider- there was no champagne- no celebration. The managers are already gearing up for November. Was May a fluke? We'll see six months from now.

There are pics of the champagne and celebration, so maybe your insider just wasn't there for the party.

Thank goodness! KOIN is finally starting to exorcise their demons and is clearing out the cobwebs. Stedman's problem was she always knew best. She didn't hide it. She was the hardest worker. She was the most conscientious. And anyone who challenged or questioned her got written off as a 'problem' employee. She was the problem employee and it took too many GM's and ND's to figure it out.

Director of Human Resources & News Operations position? What the hell kind of position is that? Can't blame the GM for eliminating that position! How can you be News Operations Manager and head of the station's Human Resources at the same? Sounds like a political position to me. I don't know one place I have ever worked where management has considered the two areas even closely related? What gives? Was she holding a gun to somebody? The paring of those two jobs makes absolutely NO sense! And judging by the hiring and firing in that place over the last 5 years, they really needed a change! That place has been so screwed up for so long. Who in their right mind would want to work there for any length of time?
