Congrats to Oregon Daily Emerald online editor Michael Calcagno, who placed as a finalist in the National SPJ Mark of Excellence awards for college journalists in the Online News Reporting category.

And news from local SPJ president Wendy Culverwell:

The chapter holds its annual membership meeting at 6 p.m. May 31 in the
banquet center of the Oregon Zoo. We elect new officers and board members
and discuss goals for the coming year. The meeting precedes the annual
awards banquet, which starts with a buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. Meeting is
free, but banquet is $30 for SPJ members and $35 for nonmembers. Yes, there will be a cash bar. Register at www.spjoregon.org

Sorry for not getting the 5/14 board meeting up in time, Wendy.

Michael was an intern at The Gresham Outlook when he was still attending Barlow High School. Not only was he poised, polite and professional despite his young age, he wrote good stories for us and never missed a deadline. It's no surprise to see him being honored by SPJ. Way to Go Michael!
