Heidi Speaks: Duin on Tauber's POJ Turf-out

Submitted by ZehnKatzen on Mon, 05/26/2008 - 12:30pm.

Not very long ago, POJ-fans were surprised by the sudden disappearance of a fond morning voice. Heidi Tauber, KPOJ's AM news voice, abruptly disappeared without warning or explanation; one day, they ID'd by their familiar and playful "THC-Thom, Heidi, and Carl", and the next day – "Carl Wolfson and Friends".

We can speak for none other than ourselves but we were fans of Heidi's work, not only because we think intellectual female voices on the radio are far too few and far between but also because she was such a stalwart of the POJ crew, as the photos on the site have attested to. I enjoyed listening to her and couldn't imagine why POJ would suddenly cashier her. The chemistry between the morning crew was indeed undeniable.

So it was like a starving man after food that we leapt on Steve Duin's typically-excellent column in The Big O, titled "There Are No Broads In Broadcasting" (14-day pay-wall warning). Here was, finally something!

Steve Duin wrote:
May 7 was Thom Hartman's birthday at KPOJ. Mike Dirks, the station's operations manager, called Tauber in at 10:30 a.m., and told her she was toast. This being the best job she's ever had, Tauber begged to stay on at least through the Oregon primary.

She says Dirks, who didn't return calls, shook her off. "We've gone beyond the point of no return," he said. "That means," Tauber translates, "I'd been warned to be perfect. My newscasts were inconsistent and not up to par.

"It was a damn hard par, too. A 5 or a 6. Uphill. Narrow. Trees everywhere."

Been there. Double-bogied that.

Although we've worked many of the same stories, I'd never met Tauber until this week, but God, I know that voice. A '97 Brunello in the land of Two Buck Chuck. The reassuring glow of the familiar.

Now, we've all heard that jobs in broadcasting are here-today-gone-tomorrow-no-warning-thanky-here's the door. We're not that naïve (and we're not in broadcasting). But if Steve Duin's column reflects reality, we wonder why they had to go this far:

Steve Duin wrote:
She still believes that. She's not bitter. She doesn't fault KPOJ. OK, so maybe the euthanasia of her e-mail account and the escort out the door was a little over the top, but she remembers every time she stumbled in a newscast and heard the creak of the coffin door.

"The best gig I've ever had. And I blew it," she says. "I was let go. Three years of me don't exist."

She blew it? They actually have her blaming herself? Sad, POJ, sad. Yes, indeed, broadcasting is cutthroat, but just because it is that way doesn't mean it has to always be that way, does it?

Now, I'm not going to stop listening to KPOJ ... after all, we have no other decent liberal voice in town. They carry Mike Malloy and Randi Rhodes; that's enough for me right there. Getting Thom to actually relocate to Oregon from Vermont is a coup of which to be proud of. And liberal radio nationwide? POJ is the template for it.

But seriously, you really ought to have done better by Heidi. Now, you know I love you KPOJ, and friends are always serious and honest with each other. This was not your finest moment. Would it have killed you to have announced it a few days in advance, given her a farewell broadcast or two?

I'm hanging with you, POJ, but please, a little more class next time. And a tip of the hat to Heidi for helping you to build an AM audience would be a heck of a neat thing to do just about now.

For a morning news person at KPOJ.

I wonder...

I hesitate to point out that spelling on three of the names in Duin's column were incorrect: Mike Dirkx, Thom Hartmann and Jeff Clarke. I learned early in my newspaper career to ALWAYS get the correct spelling of names, even if they appeared to be simple names. I guess it shouldn't take away from the subject of the column but, gee whiz, it's the Oregonian.

I'm with you on that one. It seems as though spelling has gotten absolutely horrendous over the past couple of years and not just with the Oregonian. I read a CNN article not too long ago that had no less than 20 spelling and grammar mistakes. It was so bad, I corrected all the mistakes and sent a copy to the editor. Not that I expected them to do anything about it, but just for the hope that it might open their eyes to the cruddy writing (or editing, depending on who you want to blame).

What? Carl never makes mistakes? I've gone back to OPB.

Thanks to KPOJ management I've broken my addiction to the morning show. I've moved back to KOPB for the morning, and mostly back to All Things considered on the drive home, because I find Randi Rhodes too abrasive. A little Mike Malloy goes a long way. Ring of Fire on Saturdays is worthwhile, don't think I'll give that up. But mornings without Heidi are not worth the commercials.

I once wrote a letter to Ms. Tauber castigating her for referring to the Earth Liberation Front as a 'terrorist' organization, pointing out that she was merely playing into government efforts to demonize a bunch of idealistic kids who were risking all trying to save our planet from the earth rapers. Heidi not only acknowledged the error of her ways, but she actually read my letter on the air. I have been a dedicated fan of Ms. Tauber ever since, and due to her firing, I no longer listen to KPOJ. (I now get my morning news from KBOO.)

The show is just not the same without Heidi. This morning I couldn't bear to listen to Carl and his guest "Friend", so I channel surfed and ended up listening to 750 am. Even with interesting and informative guests that Carl may have on, I can't bear to listen to the morning show any longer. It just seems to be dry and lifeless without Heidi Tauber. The 750 am was a one time thing, thank you everyone above who has recommended other choices for the morning commute.
