KPTV/KPDX: Patrick Moves Up, Flock Moves Out

Submitted by LynnS on Fri, 05/30/2008 - 10:32am.

KPTV ND Patrick McCreery is now Station Manager for the KPTV/KPDX duopoly. From the press release:

"This promotion is in recognition of Patrick's significant contributions to the performance of KPTV," said Kieran Clarke, Vice President and General Manager of KPTV/KPDX. "Over the past five years, Patrick has demonstrated a superior ability to build a winning news team. He is always focused on a winning strategy."

McCreery will oversee numerous station functions for the Portland properties including KPTV FOX-12, KPTV.com, KPDX MYN-49, KPDX.com, and LivePDX.com. Newsroom management will report to him. McCreery will report directly to Clarke.

Also at KPTV, to quiet the person in another thread, Greg Flock has been promoted from general sales manager to director of sales.

Update: Aaaand, not long after, he was shown the door. No one seems to know why, but apparently it was quite abrupt. Apologies for not having the second half of the story, guys.

Update 2: Apparently it's not clear from what I posted: Patrick is still the ND, guys. He's ND *and* Station Manager now, though I can't imagine that there won't be someone taking over some of his ND functions now. Maybe he doesn't sleep much, who knows.

Lynn..
Greg Flock is no longer at KPTV/KPDX as of last week. All of their key advertising clients have been called either by Kieran Clark or Andy Delaporte

Lynn:

Your information is incorrect.

Greg Flock was promoted several weeks ago, but he resigned his position unexpectedly late last week. He is no longer at KPTV.

Glad to see you're keeping on top of things in the world of TV.

How about a little appreciation for a truly thankless task, this site, that is? Way to not let them rattle you, Lynn.

Who's the next ND?

Submitted by Ex-Foxer (not verified) on Fri, 05/30/2008 - 6:19am.

OK, so can someone clear up who's the new ND? Or, will there even BE an ND? They say that "newsroom management" will report to PM - so what does that mean, exactly? Sounds almost like a "promotion in name only" kind of thing if he's still effectively the ND while taking on other responsibilities.

He/she will be a puppet.. No power to make decisions when the former ND is there looking over your shoulder.

Patrick will hire someone he can push around. I'll be surprised if the new ND has even medium-market experience and is over 35 years old. This new ND ( if there is one ) will be young, cheap and learning on the job.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 05/30/2008 - 7:17pm.

What good news director would take a job where the former ND is still in charge? This job will not be filled by someone with a lot of experience in TV news. I think the KPTV situation would bug anyone who really wanted to have control of the newsroom. It's hard to believe Patrick would just turn over the reins and let someone else run things.

It's Flock who's out. Lynn: I misinterpreted the update at first, too.

I wrote this in a hurry and should have clarified further that Patrick will be both SM and ND.

The new title just gives Patrick the chance to screw-up other parts of this station. Don't you think he's done enough to the newsroom?

The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason.... Mainly we are dealing with a profoundly degenerate world, a living web of foulness, greed and treachery . . . which is also the biggest real business around and impossible to ignore. You can't get away from TV. It is everywhere. The hog is in the tunnel.

Flock is history...the director of sales promotion happened ages ago. Check your sources.

As Lynn said above: she is only as good as the information that she gets. Feel free to share when you get updated information.

This quote shows up a lot and some person who perhaps considers themselves very sophisticated brings is up again. It's interesting to read but as a guy who works in television news I'm sorry I just don't see anything he said translates into the real world of broadcast journalism.

"degenerate world", "foulness", "greed", "treachary". In fact everywhere I've worked has been staffed by middle and lower middle class people working hard.

I posted the Hunter S. quote originally, and it is in fact quite accurate with regards to MANAGEMENT, not the journalists who work under them; Remember, Management's job is to make money--your job as a journalist, is to tell stories.
The quote was placed in this thread referencing the recent mgmt. changes at KPTV, where greed (IMHO) is the prime motivator for the cohorts at the top. But then again, thats what makes Donald Trump successful too. Who can argue with his millions, right?

That said, you are correct when you say it doesnt apply to the rank-and-file. They are good people who don't make a load of cash, but that's the whole point of the quote !

I too have been one of the rank-and-file in the past, but thats why I moved on.

So my friend, who says I think of myself as sophisticated, you are mistaken. Ask anyone who has the cajones at KPTV to deny that the quote applies to bosses over there; They won't be able to do it with a clear conscience.
"The hog is in the tunnel". God, I love that ending !

Is this a newly created position then? The title is a little misleading...General Manager and station manager are similar. They should have called him Manager of News Operations and Programming. That would cover his role of KPTV.com, newsroom, and KPDX, etc. duties. Good for him, but that's going to be a big role. I say give him the manager job and hire someone new for the ND position. Prediction, Patrick returns to ND or they higher someone new in the next 3 mos.

and the new hire will be young and cheap. Nobody worth having would take a job where the old ND is still hanging around watching your every move. McCreery will get someone who will esentially be a babysitter while he continues to make the decisions.

There are MANY stations around the country where a former ND is the GM. Now we can add KPTV to that long list.

If I was a ND, I think I'd welcome working with a GM who understands the challenges, demands and requirements of running an effective News operation... but maybe that's just me.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 06/02/2008 - 2:16pm.

Station manager duties vary but I've worked a couple of places where the station had both. The jobs are different. I imagine McCreery will mostly be caretaker when the current GM is away on other Meredith busines (which is often)

yeah the experience can be lacked, but hey kids sometimes young and fresh ideas are the best. with the young talent at KPTV that viewers love, its saves the corporation money and allows young talent to get into the higher markets faster.

i think the formula is a good one.

i couldn't see patrick hiring a new ND for a while. his assistant probably wouldn't be up for the new duties, so we'll wait and see.

I'm guessing you must be one the young fresh idea with no experience. Good for you.
I would not want a young dentist/doctor with no experience who was hired because he was cheap. Even if he had fresh ideas.

into the business very far

You wouldn't want a skilled profession hired because they were paid less, because we place so much emphasis on medical or dental degrees. While you seem to think that someone who most likely has the same degree as you who is in their start in a career where MANY people walk in and out of everyday. Where'd you get your start, secondly, WHEN did you get your start? You had to get it somewhere and I'm sorry if you had to work your way for years doing stories about dog shows or rodeos to get where you're at. The way I see it. A degree is a degree, it proves you can go to college for at least 4 years and then obtain mountains of debt. The newsroom is winning in many timeslots and with less overhead. The 'young' people I see on the news allows me to feel more connected in my age demo, which is the most targeted demo, because we're young. But truly, I watch KPTV at night because its on at Ten and I don't have to be up until 11:30 to get my full news. I can go to bed at 10:30 and still get a full nights rest. I get my news during the day from Reuters or the AP newsflash. Not by any local station. Sad for the local stations, but KPTV's website is too ad-ridden and KGW's is to POPup ridden. Sad.

What's the word on layoffs at KPTV's parent company, Meredith? Affecting any Fox 12ers?

Submitted by LynnS on Mon, 06/09/2008 - 12:08pm.

120 positions/staff cut, most in publishing, 20 in broadcast. No word on where the broadcast cuts were made.

Looks like Seattle stations cleaned-up.
KGW won the big awards for Portland stations, including a couple for their storm coverage last December. I like how they gave the morning news its own category. KGW beat KPTV for that one too. I can see the promo now: "KGW --- Portland's #1 rated, Emmy award-winning morning news"

1. Meredith cuts: KPTV/KPDX not affected by the cuts.

2. Debbie Curan: not likely, but who knows?

3. Greg Flock: still gone
