KGW: EP Ramirez Leaving

Submitted by LynnS on Mon, 06/02/2008 - 8:58am.

KGW EP Sally Ramirez is leaving 15th and Jeff--sorta. It's a complicated leave-taking, to say the least. She leaves on the 10th until early September and then comes back through November book to help with sweeps and launching the new Pioneer Courthouse Square studio. From Rod Gramer's memo:

I will save my formal good-byes until November. But I have to say a few words about this terrific producer, manager and friend. I do not have the space or time here to enumerate all the ways Sally has contributed to the success of KGW NewsChannel 8 over the past 10 years. Sally was my first hire when I came here 10 years ago as executive news director and she has been like my right arm ever since. She is a consummate professional journalist and a wonderful person to boot. You can't always combine those qualities in one person. Needless to say I will miss her.

The official reason for her leaving is to "spend more quality time with her family," and judging by the staggered leave-taking, that's probably really the case for once. Ramirez is also married to morning anchor Russ Lewis.

Place your bets, folks. Will this position go to someone in-house or someone from outside?

WHO CARES!

There is more. Early A.M. producer is leaving and no plans to replace her. Also, not going to replace Nancy Francis. Also, not going to hire a replacement backup pilot to replace the one from Seattle that was coming down to give their current pilot a break who by the way is working about 15 hours a day. KGW having money issues???

One more today: A dot-com position was down-sized and won't be refilled... And additional sales depatures are on the way, most are expected to be refilled.

If she ls leaving why not stay till November. All this coming and going just doesn't add up.

I don't know her and I don't work at KGW, but I am a mother and the staggered leave makes sense to me. The kids will be out of school for the summer and she'll get to spend time with them. Once they go back to school, she goes back to KGW to help them out through the Nov. book. What doesn't add up about that? It sounds like KGW is working with her to make this happen.

...once I thought about it. I homeschool, so the school schedule doesn't always occur to me, but considering the kids get out on the tenth and return in September, it's a brilliant scheme.

It totally adds up if you already know her very flexible schedule. She could have left now, but clearly wanted to honor her committment to the station and help with November sweeps/election.

No. There's nothing wierd about the coming and going. It's just so she can be around for sweeps and other important stuff and have the summer off with her kids. And there is no heir apparent.

Put all conspiracy theories aside. If you could take the summer off to hang out with your kids wouldn't you?
Then, she comes back in the fall to finish some projects she's been working on, elections, Pioneer Courthouse Square studio, etc... Then she rides off into the sunset. What part of this is complicated or confusing?

She's a mom. She's taking the summer off to spend with her kids. The ND talked her into coming back in the fall to help during sweeps and with a couple of other big projects in the works. Then she leaves for good.

I will miss Sally. I will miss that late afternoon -breaking news- battle cry. She lived for the breaking news and most often than not was spot on when it came to reacting and allocating resources. She was fun and brought a great energy every day. She added a welcome diversity to a rather white newsroom, and her bi-lingual skills will be sorely missed. With the slow economic times and the semi-hiring freeze at KGW, I hope Rod can replace her with a full time EP, from outside the Portland market.

So there isn't ANYONE inside? How about a Special Projects EP or a veteran producer? I know of at least one veteran producer in that shop. How deep is the bench? Will Rod hire to replace her before her final bow in the fall, so that there's a smooth transition?

Does anyone know when the Pioneer Courthouse Square studio will be finished? Is it still on track to debut this summer?

As I understand it the PS studio hasn't even began construction yet, there are permitting problems with the city, which is strange becasue it's supposed to be a partnership between the city and KGW. The studios are more than $150k over budget and at this point November is "wishful thinking"

Rod will fill this job with someone from outside the station and market, IMHO.
He relies on the current EP for so much.. It will have to be someone who can really multi-task.

So there isn't ANYONE inside who could replace her? What about a Special Projects EP or a veteran producer? Will they try to hire someone to be in place when she comes back in the fall, so she can have a role in training the person and ensuring a smooth transition?

KGW has some veteran producers but no one who has the skill to be successful in that job. The current EP wears a lot of hats. She's in charge of all newscasts and she's involved in many of the station's long-term projects. Nobody here right now could handle that workload and I doubt anyone could work as well with our Asst. ND. They made a good team.

Seems that Belo is so broke they can no longer supply Culligan Fresh water for the KING,KGW or NWCN newsrooms. This e-mail came out today:

I am sorry to inform you that because of the need to closely monitor expenses right now, I must discontinue our supplies of bottled water in both the Seattle and Portland newsrooms. As much as I would like to keep the service going, it is a very significant annual expense.

WoW! Maybe they could take some of the 1000's of gallons of Jet Fuel that they waste every month in that gas guzz SKY 8 and drink that. That stuff only runs anywhere between 6-8 bucks a gallon.

50 Gals per hour x 75 hours a month = 3750 gals per month x 6.00 per gal = $22500.00 per month.
x 7.00 per gal = $26250.00 per month.

Whats next? Toilet Paper?

Come on................

Are we talking about individual bottles or a single common water cooler here?

Most cities are trying to ban individual bottles anyway, so why not spin this as an environmental measure rather than a cost cutting one?

I'm sure Cronkite sat around worrying about where he would get his next swig of precious bottled water.
Most reports out there suggest that public tap water is just as good as the commercial products. And if it isn't, then why not go do a story about it?

Most studies show public tap water to be just as good as commercial products. I can't imagine Cronkite worrying about where he was going to get his next swig of precious bottled water.

The 8 glasses a day thing is a myth, so just suck it up.

They're getting rid of the actual water cooler... not bottles. So, where will everyone gossip now?

Here in Oregon we have some of the best tap water in the country !! Why people need bottled water is absurd....

What happened to Doppler 8000? KGW used to use their own radar in Camas but I noticed that since they switched to HD, they've been using the Weather Service's Doppler radar out of Scappoose.

Not ready for HD. Since they are getting rid of the Culligan man, what makes you think they are going to spend the money to upgrade D8K to HD? Besides, all the money is going into Zaffino's pocket.

When Nancy Francis and Jennifer Iveson left about the same time, Mike Benner and Erica Heartquist both started. They might not be replacing her anchor duties on the weekend, but the headcount is still the same.

They seem to usually only have one evening reporter working anyway, so it had seemed odd to me that they needed two anchors when their 11pm news typically starts off with a live report from their one reporter followed by a taped report by the same reporter.
