KPTV Goes Berserk, Schedules Non-Stop News--wait, no, it just feels that way...

Submitted by LynnS on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 6:28pm.

From today's memo from the really rather overexposed on OMI these days Patrick McCreery, SM/ND:

I am very excited to announce the addition of two new Fox 12 newscasts on Fox 12 and PDX-49.

Starting September 8th we are adding a 5pm newscast on KPTV Fox 12 and an 8pm newscast on PDX-49.

These will both be one-hour newscasts making Fox 12 news the undisputed news leader in Portland!

Absolutely no relation to this being a year ending in a number that's divisible by four, I'm sure.

That makes it...lessee...not counting Better...I think eight hours of news a day? Which doesn't seem to me to be more than the rest do, but I may be counting on my fingers wrong; I got too much sun at Park Day. That's a lot of Dirty Dining in any event. I would think they'd go for at least a modest staff-up, but who knows. Work smarter, not harder? har-de-har?

FOX12 reporters and photogs wish they were unionized right about now. Guess what guys.. You're already paid less than your counterparts at other stations in town.. now your boss just added ANOTHER 2 hours of local news. Think they'll be adding any people? probably not many, if any. It's just more work for an already over-worked staff. Enjoy!

KPTV would do by my math... 4:30-9 4 and half hours
4:00-6:00 two hours
8-9 one hour
10-11:30 1 and half hours

KPTV total: 9 hours

KGW.. 4:30-7am 2 1/2 hours
Noon 1 hour
5-7:30 minus network news 2 hours (adding their announced new 7pm show)
10 CW 1/2 hour
11 1/2 hour

KGW total: 6 1/2 hours

What's the total if you include the weekends?

KOIN has proven that you can compete with a skeleton crew. Their reporters and photographers do three remotes every night during the 5 to 6:30 block.Plus, they're feeding the web.
KPTV can do this,by adding just a couple of people, mainly producers, and maybe a reporter or two.
It's a lot cheaper than other programming, and they can sell the hell out of it, especially in an election cycle. It will mean much more work for the employees in Beaverton. I wonder if the paychecks will reflect it. We already know the answer to that.

People who don't want to work for what they're being paid don't have to. It's a free country. You worry about your bank account, and I'll worry about mine.

I worry about your reporters and photographers. They are young and don't realize they are getting ripped-off and they're about to work much harder than they already do. You're right about one thing: people can leave if they want. Just wait and see how many people FOX12 loses over the next year or so as they add all these newscasts and no more staff. They'll burn out quickly.

Who will anchor these new newscasts?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 07/02/2008 - 7:16pm.

Will be a mix like KATU. It's very unlikely that Wayne, Shauna, and Mark will do all those shows spread out over such a long shift.

But does quantity really mean quality? I'm not convinced. Why are these extra shows needed? Is it the ad revenue? So many questions.

if young, eager reporters and photogs want to work long hours for low pay in hopes of getting real experience, they certainly will not be discouraged by management. the only complaints will come from the less young, less eager who don't want to be undersold.

If I really search my memory, I can remember when it seemed damn generous of the bosses to let me come in early, stay late, grab some stories and use all their expensive equipment to do it. that was print, but I am sure the excitement is the same in broadcast. and what would we geezers give to have some of that feeling back.

I know, it threatens the pay scale. I know experience matters. Judgment, too. Afteer all, some
old hands can keep the new folks from treating a car fire as news ( well, not always at kptv ). == no longer a quick brown fox

Is she now pulling 11 hour days? 7 - 9 am: Good Day, Better, 4 pm, 5 pm...at KPTV/KPDX til 6 PM? That's a lot of news and too much work. I bet she starts the day with Better and goes to to 6. That's my guess.

Or is Better not taped live?

Check out Wayne Havrelly on KGW on weekends.
He comes in at 5am or earlier to prep for the 6am three hour newscast and anchors the 5-6pm newscast.
In between he reports, puts together a package and a vo/bite or two.
The package is written twice... a vo/bite for the show while he is anchoring and a pkg for the 6:30 pm newscast.

I believe that it has been said on this board before that she does a split shift, so she isn't at the station for 11 hours a day.

Submitted by Myhousemf on Thu, 07/03/2008 - 9:47am.

Better isn't live. The local segments are taped minutes after GDO finishes. Then it airs the next day.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 07/03/2008 - 1:53pm.

No. She works a split shift now during the transition phase. When the new shows launch in September, she'll move off GDO completely and become an evening anchor with Wayne & Shauna. Kim will be dayside (to tape Better) and the other two will still work late-night.

At least they were smart enough to add it after the Simpson's re-runs on channel 49.

Submitted by skihoodoo on Thu, 07/03/2008 - 9:49am.

what about smackdown when it launches on my network in september i hope this does not mean no more smackdown in hd

Submitted by Anonymous Source on Thu, 07/03/2008 - 7:51pm.

I think the plan is to move network programming to 9-11pm.. so smackdown should still be there...just an hour later.

I worked at KPDX in the early 90s and enjoyed the contract between KOIN and KPDX news.

I bet KPTV adds one more producer, one more writer, and one more reporter.

A Producer for the 5 PM newscast.
A Reporter and writer for all newscasts.

-Hiring a new meteorologist? That's an interesting thought. Probably not. Poor Mark would have to do all?

-I bet Maus quits the last two hours of Good Day Oregon, and Julie will anchor all 4.5 hours.

-Maus will continue with Better, the 4 PM, and 5 PM.

-Shauna and Wayne will continue to alternate with 4 PM.

-Kevin Coari is taken off the weekend desk and anchors 5 PM with Maus, and Shauna/Wayne alternate the 8 PM with Kevin. I like this formula, what do ya'll think?

Poor photographers and reporters now say. "I work at KPTV-KPDX and I work for the 4 PM, 5 PM, 8 PM, 10 PM, AND 11 PM newscasts!" Holy smokes. That's a lot, but congratulations to KPTV in this growth.

I am willing to bet there will be a shift in the weather department of some sort.

20 bucks says they move Drew Jackson around, again. Poor guy never gets a solid schedule.

ps I feel like this is a demotion for Kimberly Maus. Known in the PDX-Media for a decade as her role, now she's bumped to the afternoons, she's losing her fame.

That really sucks! Quality goes down the drain with the additional newscasts. There's hardly time to be creative when you are pumping out crappy crime story after crappy crime story. Where is the viewer benefit? No thanks, I would run from that station as fast as possible.
