TV news in Portland

Submitted by Riposte on Thu, 07/03/2008 - 3:40pm.

I'm new to Portland but it makes no sense to me that we have four (are there more?) complete news teams here in Portland. They show the same news, the same weather and sports, at about the same time.

All that money poured into these operations and careers, is there a big picture that I am missing? Are these stations all profitable?

Why does KATU have exclusive video of the crash on I 205 caught on ODOT cameras? Don't all the stations have access?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 07/03/2008 - 11:10pm.

Yes. We all have the same camera access, but you have to roll on the video at the station. We heard the chase on the scanner, immediately asked the editors to roll and caught the whole thing.

But it all comes down to which newsroom can hit 'record' the fastest and make sure the correct camera is punched up.

And now there is the boat crash and cops shoot man using car as a weapon! Plus, the guy with the ballons and his B-B gun!

Now that she a "respected journalist" is now in a commercial for LIVE PDX she can no longer be respected or taken seriously. So what do you think?

Submitted by Tv_Viewer on Mon, 07/07/2008 - 5:06pm.

I was able to separate the fact that she was in a commercial from when she was on the set reading the news. In my mind she was essentially doing the same thing since she was reading a script. I can remember stories that she was in on Better about Mommy and me disco. How is that any different.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 07/07/2008 - 9:18pm.

She's compromised in both cases. She should be thrown off the air!

Coupla comments:
First, does Shauna really need the money? If I planned to make a career as a real journalist, I wouldn't be a spokesperson for products in commercials or other businesses. There're too many ways this can come back to haunt you, no matter how innocent the business seems at the time. (The people who are confirmed Lars-haters love to point out the commercials he does for various businesses.)
And secondly, if I were the News Manager, I would prohibit my news people from being involved in anything other than the News Show. This includes roles as hosts for Parade coverage or other shows which are entertainment-oriented, game shows and the like. I remember one of the stations some time ago had their news people affiliated with Providence Medical in commercials/public service announcements. Murphy's Law pounced a week or so later and the news people were covering a scandal within the Providence organization. Pardon my fuzzy memory, but someone else likely can recall the details.

This company is an advertiser at FOX12 and the sales dept probably cut a deal that included a news anchor appearing in the commercial. Shauna gets a few extra bucks and the station gets a happy advertiser. Who cares about ethics, right? What J-school did Shauna attend that taught her this kind of thing is OK?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 07/11/2008 - 12:45pm.

This is funny. This clown goes on about J-school, yet is happy and quick to make dead wrong assumptions. If you actually knew half of what you think you know, you'd be dangerous. As the other poster said, Shauna didn't get a dime for this promo, PDXLive is owned and works out of the same building as Meredith's KPTV/KPDX. Some reporters and writers even write for PDXlive... and contribute story ideas.

Shauna never went to college.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 07/11/2008 - 6:29pm.

I know her. She attended in Utah, through her college she interned locally and had a newscast and radio gig near by.

Submitted by Tv_Viewer on Fri, 07/11/2008 - 7:37pm.

What does that have to do with her qualification's. Peter Jennings never went to college either.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 07/11/2008 - 8:17pm.

Shauna also doesn't anchor national news.

It's not necessarily a bad thing that she didn't go to college. Just stating the facts.

Now, I'm not saying she is bad, she is just fine. I may disagree on her choice (or not?) to appear in those ads, but she is still a good anchor.

Submitted by LynnS on Sat, 07/12/2008 - 9:21am.

Where did you get these facts? I'm just curious, since it's pretty clear Shauna did go to college. (If she'd made it to anchor on KPTV without a college degree, that would say a great deal indeed--and none of it negative.)

Actually, she did. Check your frikin facts before slamming perfectly nice and good people.

Specifically says on her Bio that i found by doing a search on the net..
And I QUOTE kptv.com "Her career began in Utah, where she produced,Anchored a DAILY Newscast on her college radio station. Also ANCHORED A DAILY NEWSCAST ON HER COLLEGE TV STATION..AFTER THAT WENT TO DO AN INTERNSHIP AT FOX 13 IN SALT LAKE CITY.."
SO YOUR Statement that she never went to college IS INACCURATE!
READ HER BIO BEFORE YOU START GOING MAKING COMMENTS ABOUT OTHERS!

It was said in another thread that Blogs would replace newspapers.

Here is a perfect example of why if that does happen, it's a horrible, horrible trend.

Someone pops off with several "facts" all of which are wrong.

I wonder how many people read the post about KPTV, and never made it back to read all the follow-ups?
How many people are running around thinking KPTV (which I hate by the way) has an anchor that is doing something shady?

No recourse, no correction, just posting of fiction that damages people's reputation.

God I love the internet.

Submitted by LynnS on Sat, 07/12/2008 - 9:55am.

Not just on blogs--in newspapers (page two corrections, anyone?), on radio, on TV. Just sayin'.

When it comes to Newspapers, TV and Radio if a reporter makes too many of those mistakes over and over, they aren't long for the business.

On the Internet you can continue to post falsehoods over and over and over and no one will ever know who you are and which posts you have entered (thanks to anonymous posting).

Just sayin'. ;)

Submitted by LynnS on Sat, 07/12/2008 - 3:10pm.

If one puts great credence into anonymous posts on a blog, the credibility problem is between one's ears; one is overly credulous. Are there going to be people who do? Sure, and there are people who thought the Weekly World News was true long before "blog" was a word.

Blogs themselves, by and large--not the comments on them--are not anonymous. I'm known, for instance. Markos Moulitsas is known. Dooce is known. Jeff Gannon is known, for cryin' out loud. Just as with any other news source, people read over time and figure out whether they trust the source and/or agree with it.

Keep in mind that I do not advocate the "death" of the newspaper--good grief, I love newspapers. I advocate the evolution of newspapers. The medium itself is not the product. Your product isn't the paper, the magazine, the 5 o'clock news. Information is. Get it out there, as many different ways as you can.

Shauna wasn't paid to do the spot. Live pdx and KPTV are both owned by the same company.

Some pretty nice hours she has over there and she's been over there forever. Anyone have an idea of what she's making?

She's making A LOT more than you. Now get back to work!

I always took issue with KATU for listing the salon which styled Melissa Mill's hair during the closing credits of its 6:30pm newscast years ago. I found it sort of tacky.

I dont care what Shauna Does if shes not reading the news..When SHE IS reading the news I pay attention...
Shauna is a great person and very smart and not one of those reporters that asks the Wrong question at the Wrong time..
Ya'all can learn from her experience!!

Muah Shauna!!!LOVE YA

Why doesn't KPTV advertise the fact they own the site in their television commercials? Especially if their reporters are contributing to the site. It would only seem to make sense.

As for Shauna Parsons and college, Bill Gates was a college drop out. It didn't seem to hurt his chances at success. Some do find success without a degree.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 07/12/2008 - 8:56am.

Unless you're exceptional, these days to enter television news one does need a college degree. News Directors will throw your resume out if they don't see "Bachelor's degree" written underneath education.

And in all other cases, it's so much harder to move up ranks if you're lacking a college degree.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 07/12/2008 - 10:41am.

Seriously? You're comparing anyone in news to Bill Gates? What? He's one of the most brilliant men of our times. He dropped out because his head was exploding with information and he probably knew more than his professors. He started Microsoft. He wasn't looking for a job at a local television station. How can you even use that as an example?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 07/12/2008 - 1:43pm.

Hey KPTV insiders, any word on when/if KPTV is going to be hiring new people to fill in for the 4 and 8'OClock news?

Chad Carter has gone solo for a while. What's the deal with that?

Submitted by TALPDX on Sat, 07/12/2008 - 3:08pm.

I figured someone would make the requisite "you're comparing Shauna Parsons to Bill Gates". Glory be to the Father – the whole world isn't going to come crashing down. They both didn't finish college, period. That’s where the comparison beings – and ends. The reasons why they left college are immaterial. He’s certainly had unparalleled success, but she hasn’t done too darn badly for herself.

If you have some actual solid evidence that someone's bio is phony, present it. Otherwise, it's time to go away.

First, she did get paid if she was asked by managment to do the commercial. What would she have done if management would have asked her to endorse a politcal preference? She could always say no to both and keep her integrity.

I have seen local "celebrities" news people do public service commercials, but rarely and very rarely do I see some do a commercial for a business.
