I-205 chase: great call by KATU

Submitted by Zamboni on Fri, 07/04/2008 - 10:31am.

People get knocked around a lot here - so for contrast - big congrats to the team at K2 for having the presence of mind to roll on the ODOT cameras for the chase.

Great video that you just couldn't stop watching (story suggestion: was it really a great idea for the constabulary to crash into the guy and send him skidding across six lanes of traffic on a busy holiday weekend? Looked like someone's been watching too many of one of those C.W. Jensen "World's Wildest Car Chases and Doughnuts" specials that rerun on Tru TV).

It would be great to see the Web hits for this.

Nice work, KATU desk/editors/producers/staffers to be named later. Made those Sky 8 aftermath shots look pretty weak by comparison.

Holy Crap, KATU. Amazing and no video editing needed! This is an example of being resourceful.

So where's the link to the video?
Why not post it here?

Submitted by Beckham on Sat, 07/05/2008 - 12:59am.

Yeah KATU rocked on this one, I gotta say, KGW dropped the ball on video!

That pickup was two cars away from hitting a motorcyclist instead of a vehicle. DUMB MOVE by the cop in the blue car (County mountie? City cop? OSP?)

All KATU did was run the ODOT feed. Whoop-de-fricken'-do.

So have any of you alleged journos found out and interviewed the ODOT camera technician who did the brilliant camera work? Or are your egos too fat to to be honest with the public and place the real kudos where it belongs?

At the risk of ignoring the advice (attributed to Mark Twain)

Quote:
Never argue with a fool; onlookers might not be able to tell the difference

here goes:

A cop chase is chaotic for a TV newsroom. People are trying to track it on the scanners, scramble crews, launch a chopper - and figure out exactly what is going on.

It's like shouting "fire" in a crowded fire.

In that whirlwind of activity, it is remarkable that someone thought to record the goings-on. Three out of four newsrooms didn't.

Yes, the cinematographer at ODOT did well. Keep in mind that he/she likely wasn't trying to answer 1,000 questions, rely information, think strategically, keep track of 15 other stories and run the camera. Only the last part.

So, to summarize: the "alleged journos" were doing a lot more than "just running the ODOT feed."

Wr return you now to your regularly scheduled folly.

So three out of four newsrooms didn't think to utilize the ODOT camera. Nothing more. How is this remarkable since your next paragraph has you balancing 1,00 spinning plates at once, texting with your best friend and doing a voiceover? Only one station had the foresight to grab the live feed as it occurred.

And you know this how? Have you interviewed the ODOT technician as a followup? Do you know what went down in the ODOT communications center at the time? Is your comparison to a TV newsroom with the ODOT Comm Center even fair?

They didn't "run" the feed. That belongs to ODOT.

You journos give yourself way too much credit when in reality, you were all bystanders.

Don't obfuscate your ineptitude with hyperbole. You aren't answering 1000 questions, you aren't thinking strategically, and you're not keeping track of anything else. You're freaking out. It's what you do. The guy at ODOT knew what his job was and did it. That's the difference.

Submitted by Zamboni on Sat, 07/05/2008 - 3:08pm.

What eloquent word choice. Thanks for stopping by. I'll treasure your comments always.

Submitted by shifty on Sat, 07/05/2008 - 8:23pm.

You're right. The ODOT guy did his job well because his job is easy. You guys in the newsroom, well, you're practically heroes. That was your original point, wasn't it?

Did I offend you with my use of the word "bullshit?" I honestly couldn't think of a more appropriate word.

I still can't.

...your inability to think of another word is not surprising.

Here's some help: www.dictionary.com

You'll be surprised at all the different words you'll find there. And oh, the places you'll go.

Warmly,

Maybe you could use that dictionary site to look up the word "thesaurus."

Someone mentioned that the camera operator at ODOT did a great job. You minimized that accomplishment while overinflating your own role.

What word would you choose?

Time for me to take Twain's advice (helpfully cited above for the savvy reader) before the Fairy Blogmother sends all of us to our rooms -- without supper.

Excellent choice. I'll do the same, sulking in internet defeat.

I wouldn't exactly call it "remarkable" that anyone in the KATU newsroom thought to roll on DOT's. That is the FIRST thing that anyone on the Assignment Desk or whoever handles the ingesting of that video, should have thought to do!

I've worked in newsrooms in Portland, Seattle, Miami and Orlando...I saw the video...it was good. But I can guarantee you that any Miami or Orlando newsroom would have really reemed someone for not thinking to roll on DOT's...hello? Common News-Sense?

they are not like the 5 million other stations that all they do is brag.....

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 07/10/2008 - 12:09pm.

They are 2nd or 3rd place in every newscast they do. They aren't #1 anywhere. They lost the 4PM to a brand new competitor. So what would they say in a promo? "KATU news -- consistently not #1" Trust me, KATU would brag a lot if they could.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 07/10/2008 - 8:20pm.

The lead in to KATU's 4 is horrible! Also, KPTV gets to showcase all of their resources at 4, while KATU has to "tease" stories for the later show. Apples and Oranges people! I do think KATU's 4:00 anchors are really good together.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 07/11/2008 - 6:50pm.

This post is hilarious. Actually KPTV's lead in so far this book is worse than KATU's. And yet it still beats KATU's 4. But I'll agree with you, that the problems with KATU's four have more to do with KATU than KPTV. It was KATU that decided to piss away a good leadin that was producing numbers in the 4's when they went to a full hour. And it is KATU who decides to tease viewers at 4 instead of actually giving them them full news. Apples and Oranges. Maybe you're right.

It will be interesting to see if KPTV holds back news when they expand this Fall from 5-6pm.

"they DONT brag like everyone else...... meaning KGW not katu

Submitted by .Chris on Fri, 07/18/2008 - 10:21pm.

They were to scared to show what katu did, the ODOT feed. KATU actually had the guts to show the live feed. KGW was scared it will go agenst the FCC when there is a lot worse on TV

I think KGWs problem was busy being getting ready to start some downtown trouble with their new studio tring to be like the today show whitch is like what? 5 hours long now? KGW is enjoying to much of their glamore if you ask me

though KGW did interviews witch is a plus they still dont have the guts to post the actual feed. But they dont mind doing their usual "over extragarting talks". One reason why I dont like KGW, or any NBC news source. If a plane crashes they say" a devastating air craft crash leaves many people in shock and horror while rescurers search for the missing people still trapped in the devestating crash. They over do it..

Kudos to KATU for the live feed.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 07/07/2008 - 12:24pm.

Did you happen to see the coverage that KGW cobbled together for their web page after the chase/crash? Captions and links made it sound like they actually had something interesting to look at (like the K2 video). They ended up with aerials way after much of the hub-bub was over. There was already absorbant on the ground to soak up fuel and most of the dozen-or-more police who had originally been on scene were already gone. They even put it together in a slide show. Sheesh...

I don't think KOIN even tried. Didn't even get around to looking at KPTV since I couldn't take my eyes off the KATU coverage.

When you're the only station in town with extrodinary video, it only makes sense to run it into the ground. Everyone was talking about it.

Bravo!

(And good job unidentified ODOT worker)

The installer is Third party... not even ODOT... However someone at ODOT was in control of the camera(s). But its funny how everyone thinks this is so nice of them... How many times have you watched the morning news and see the camera(s) moved, out of focus, video not locked, the video pixels, etc... yeah some of this is bad choice on the producers for taking the shots. But sometimes I think the guys at ODOT move the camera(s) because a TV station took it live.

The guys at ODOT that control the cameras are the same guys that dispatch COMET. If they are moving the camera, it's probably so they can determine if they need to pick up the mic and send a COMET truck there.

http://www.rtc.wa.gov/Studies/Archive/trunnion/pr-odot.97-181-1.htm (I find it interesting that I can't find any comparable information on ODOT's webpage, but find it from a Washington state website...)

This is how news should be. and KATU didnt over exaggerate like KGW does. We know people got hit, we know some may have gotten hurt, we know there was damange. No need to put so much empthus (think thats the word) in to the damn news story. We arnt all stupid.

Even though KATU may have a sort of theme and fell that they dont have that KGW has I don't care, I rather get the news while still being entertained. Plus KATU has the best set and graphics hands down. Best set since their 97-2001 set (that has some class right there, with the "glass windows" from the bankgrupt tower) and best graphics since the 97-2001 "slanted box" graphics (those had class also with actual graphics like boxes, while others were still using pre 1995 era with just lines and text) Plus a great selection of people. Brian Wood made a great addtion to KATU and I fell KATU is getting better now. KATU doesnt make you fell stupid like KGW does...

I'm not tring to put down KGW, but I just don't like their way of doing things, with braging on how their the best station in town and saying that like 50 times in a 30 second ad.

sorry for going a bit off topic here..... just wanted to put in my 2 cents
