KOIN: New Vision Expands

Submitted by LynnS on Tue, 07/08/2008 - 12:47pm.

From the comments we discover that KOIN owner New Vision has expanded, purchasing KTMJ in Topeka, KS. Purchased it from Montgomery Broadcasting. This now makes two Kansas stations NV owns along with longtime KOIN sister station KSNW in Wichita. The purchase pushes the NV portfolio to 17 stations.

People on OMI familiar with KOIN write repeatedly about New Vision and how they don't seem to be interested in making investments in their current properties. In other industries, I've seen poorly managed firms neglecting their own holdings while purchasing additional ones. In the end, the result usually means a business failure. Or in this case, perhaps another ownership flip?

What a bunch of negative Nellies.
The more New Vision TV expands the better the pool of reinvest money.
The whole idea is to have more properties bringing in money not just one.
It wouldn't matter if they spent $1 billion dollars on KOIN, you would still bitch.

Enjoy your misery.

Location for the dimwitted Kelly Day....She would be a Mensa candidate there..... Sign the transfer papers !!

Again, I'm shocked (then again, maybe I'm not) at the shallowness of people. I've never met Kelley Day, but I have a feeling that if her IQ was twice as high as yours, you'd still badmouth her. Get a life....

TVNewsday (www.tvnewsday.com) reports that New Vision is starting a new local CBS affiliate in Bend, on current KOIN translator KBNZ-LP, "in a few weeks"...including local newscasts for the market.

You think Kelley Day is bad (I laugh at that), I have seen much, much worse people than her. Try the main female anchor at (I can't believe, or so they say, they're #1)King in Seattle, what a snore!

Submitted by Shawn on Wed, 07/09/2008 - 4:13pm.

Kelley Day is one of the worst female anchors in the northwest. Anyone who dares to compare Ms. Day to KING 5 anchor Jean Enersen doesn't know his/her ass from a whole in the ground. Ms. Enersen has been a Seattle television icon for 40 years now. Jean Enersen is at the top of her game and shows no signs of retiring. KOIN is a shell of its former self. From Mike Donahue and Shirley Hancock to Day and Gianola. If New Vision were smart they'd ditch Gianola and Day, put Mike Donahue back on in the evenings and send out a search party for Ms. Hancock. It couldn't be any worse that what they have now, could it?

Not only is Jean Enerson a very good anchor, but she's also brillaint. Attempting to sell her as anything but is absurd. She's got a terrific instinct for the news business and its reflected in her role as lead anchor of Seattle's number one news station. Any station in any market in this country would be extremely lucky to have her.

Years ago, I can remember her co-anchoring KING 5's coverage of the funeral of late Senator Warren Magnuson. She was flawless.

As for Kelley Day, she's not my favorite cup of tea. But to compare Jean Enerson and Kelley Day is like comparing apples and oragnes. It doesn't fly.

I 100% agree with your post TALPDX. Jean is the best in the northwest. And in my opinion Lori Matsukawa comes a very close second. KING 5 News is SO lucky to have two such talented anchors on their air. KOMO 4's Kathy Goertzen is also very very good at what she does. And Kathi is a wonderful person, warm and compassionate.

In PDX I'd say that Tracy Barry is the best with Laural Porter as runner up. Do you agree?

I don't know what you're watching when you see Jean Ennerson and Kathy Gertsen. Ennerson is a lot worse then Gertsen, but still.

Shawn, for the most part I agree with you. Kathi Goertzen is the best in the Seattle market. I don't want to ruffle any feathers, but I think I like Kathi better. I have met Kathi a few times and she is one of the nicest people in the business. And I am sure many have heard, Kathi has had some health problems and I guess is recovering now.

No way. They're not the best Portland anchors. They have no personality. They seem robotic to me.

It's pretty obvious by reading all the KOIN entries that both Jeff Gianola and Kelly Day NEED TO GO!
WAKE UP KOIN
Time for Portland's very own Ted Baxter and Sue Ann Nivens to go bye bye!!

You guys take your own subjective opinions waaaay too seriously. Kelley is a nice person, just as intelligent as you, and a perfectly good anchor. Or not. Whatever. Didn't your mom ever tell you not to judge others by their appearance? Do you think you're smarter than her? Really? Then go get a 6 figure income. Mb

yes, let's all pick on the gorgeous girl with the huge paycheck. because we're not jealous. riiiight.

OK you guys, move it to an open thread. I would prefer, however, that you all take a chill pill, sit under the air conditioner, soak your heads--whatever. The heat is making you all overly bitchy. Knock it off. It's off-topic.

The Bend Bulletin had a story this morning that KOIN/New Vision will launch KBNZ by fall.
The station will carry CBS and KOIN programing.
They are converting their translator to a LPTV station.
The ad pie in Central Oregon just got a little more interesting!

More importantly, by upgrading a translator to an LPTV they potentially get access to program and sell several more digital channels when the FCC finally converts LPTV stations to digital.

By the looks of it KOIN plans to open some kind of bureau in Bend and provide content to the existing newscast at first, then "eventually" create a full local newscast for Bend. Question: Isn't it about time someone installed enough translators to increase the size of Bend's DMA so it doesn't just cover Deschutes County? Presumably that would allow for slightly higher ad rates, too...

I don't think the folks at New Vision did their homework in Bend. The ABC station, KOHD, has been on the air for almost two years and hasn't made a dent yet! Their 6pm newscast does a 1.0 rating and 2.0 share at 6pm. And now a low power CBS station with terrible ratings is entering the market. I think the financial strain this is going to cause will put even more pressure on the poor people at KOIN.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Thu, 07/10/2008 - 9:09pm.

To be fair, KOHD's ads have been on the air for nearly two years, but much of that was broadcasting KEZI news/programming. Sounds like that is what NV wants to duplicate: the most ad revenue possible, without actually putting any money into the market. KOHD's own local newscasts have only been on the air since September, 2007.

Trust me. KOIN did their homework. Who says the ratings are terrible? Ask the competition about KOIN's May book.

That piece of news about the Bend CBS affiliate was posted up this thread, but it got buried in the cat fight over (I guess) two female Portland anchors.

I guess that's more important, though people in PDX may or may not care about Bend.

"The station will carry CBS and KOIN programing." As far as I know, that's what the translator is doing now :)

Are they going to simulcast any KOIN stuff after "going local"?

It's sad to think that because someone earns a healthy income the rest of us are allegedly jealous. Viewers are entitled to have opinions as to whether or not the anchors are good or bad. Why would stations go through the trouble of finding personalities that resonate well with the audience? This is not North Korea. We do have options. And we are entitled to our opinions.
