O News: Detzel Leaves, Cuts Rumored, Bureaus to Close (Updated)

Submitted by LynnS on Fri, 07/11/2008 - 9:48am.

WWeek reports that Oregonian high-level editor Tom Detzel has joined former O editor Stephen Engelberg at ProPublica, a national non-profit sponsoring investigative journalism.

And over at the blog "More Hockey Less War" (which frankly seems like an oxymoron if the hockey games I've been to are any indication), Steve Rawley says his sources are telling him the O intends to close some bureaus and cut staff, with a reduction of 50 staff positions company-wide the goal. I have no idea who his sources are, so take that as you will.

Update: The Gresham Outlook has confirmed that the O is closing its Gresham, Tigard and Vancouver bureaus. South Metro and West Metro are reportedly staying open.

The idea of being an anti-war hockey nut isn't so unusual north of the 49th parallel. In fact, it's probably the norm there. :)

Thanks for the linkage. I'm pretty darn confident in my sources.

Hopefully the O keeps enough people on staff to continue to manufacture the narrative of the existential struggle between everyone who rides a bicycle in Portland and everyone who drives a car.

Anybody out there know if The O intends to move the retail advertising dept. at the current Southwest Bureau back to the Broadway headquarters location? Both the Southwest and West bureaus had large advertising sales departments along with the news division areas. Does anyone know if there have been sizable cuts in the personnel of the advertising departments? They brought in someone from Gannett to assume the position of advertising director about 2 years ago. It was said that he was extremely demanding and set very high sales goals for salespeople.

Is it a coincidence the paper's going to hell two years after a Gannett person comes in?

that the ad content has gone to hell since the Gannett guy arrived? Because that's all he's involved with. He has nothing to do with news.

With three metro bureaus closing, has anyone heard whether the zoned tabs will follow? These are the weeklies...in Portland subscribers get...http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/.

Fred Stickel told the Business Journal that nothing changes for coverage or the weekly editions. Just the staff of the three bureaus will work out of the other bureaus.
