1. KPTV is doing great this July, better than July 2007. #2 at 11pm??? and still beating KATU at 4pm???
2. KGW continues to dominate the 5-7pm hours.

Looks like KOIN's gains have all but disappeared. I know that the July book doesn't really matter much, but it still shows trends and weaknesses. KOIN is in last place in all but one time slot, 5:00am. KOIN comes in 3rd out of 4 during the 5am hour. I guess we'll see what November brings for KOIN.

Any changes in the pipeline at KOIN before the beginning of the fall season?

Its especially meaningless when the numbers are wrong...

I have zero access to these numbers. Send me the accurate ones from a credible email address and we'll do something about it.

Lynn,

The numbers posted are the numbers that I've seen as well. They are not wrong. However, I believe they include all seven days of the week.... so they may appear "wrong" to a person who has seen only Monday-Friday averages.

Sorry genius:

The numbers are inaccurate. Maybe you've seen them but cannot read them. Everyone knows they don't do seven day numbers during the July book. Its embarassing that someone posts whatever someone sends without checking out the facts. I'll let people affected send the true numbers.

But this is as silly as trying project the winner at halftime.

Who, exactly, are "they"? If you're referring to Nielsen, then you're quite misinformed. Nielsen doesn't provide stations rolling averages during the sweep. Clients must calculate the rolling average themselves based on the overnights. Only when Nielsen releases the "book" a couple weeks after the sweep ends will all clients get official averages for the period. And, yes, there will be seven-day averages contained in this July book, just as there are in every book. So I have no idea what you're talking about when you say, "Everyone knows they don't do seven day numbers during the July book." That statement is not only vague and unclear, it's also not true.

I have the Nielsen daily overnights for each day of the book so far. I can dump them into Excel and calculate any kind of average I want. One-day, five-day, seven-day, anything. I didn't post the numbers in this thread, but I can confirm that they are the same numbers I get when I put them into my spreadsheet and do the math. So, again, the numbers posted are correct (through Wednesday 7/16).

They're number one in every time period, aside from the 11 where they're a strong number two. Will the upcoming expansion hurt their numbers? How are the rank and file over there feeling about the new shows?

Way to guys!

OK, now add an afternoon newscast?? Any thoughts?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 07/18/2008 - 11:04am.

Looks like Channel 8 is winning noon, 5pm-7pm, and 11 pm. In short -- the actual NEWS blocks. KPTV pulls ahead of KGW in the early morning fluff and features blocks. Anyone who thinks those morning shows are "news" needs to head back to J school.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 07/18/2008 - 12:00pm.

KPTV is killing KGW in the morning, winning every single morning news cast. Hello? Fluff? I don't think so.
KPTV is killing KGW's sad sad 10pm newscast. Fluff? Nope.
KPTV's 10pm numbers are killing all other late night newscasts in the city. Fluff? No way.
KPTV's 4pm is killing KATU's 4pm. Fluff? Nope, the 4pm on Fox 12 is less "fluffy" than KATU's.
So tell me again, why is KGW slipping so quickly in every other time slot besides the 5-7pm? I'm having a hard time understanding your thought process, Mr. or Ms. J school.

KOIN can't seem to get out of last place...what gives?!?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 07/19/2008 - 9:03pm.

What gives?
How about three years of mismanagement and shortsightedness? Here's a station that has done essentially nothing to improve it's profile while KGW and Fox have been almost non-stop in pursuit of first place. We shouldn't be surprised they're essentially in last place but it's really the demos that count - so they may catch some break there. KATU, however, is doing very poorly considering the money and effort they've put in their product and this once again shows that viewers are rejecting the news product on 2/6. Both stations have weak news directors and GM's. KOIN has weak ownership.

If I want the latest in local crime and punishment news, I'll turn to KPTV. If I want to learn something more substancial, I'll turn to KGW.

Any idea why 8 would be sliding like that in the mornings?

Submitted by pdxtvwatcher on Sat, 07/19/2008 - 11:43am.

KPTV and KGW both teeter-totter up and down in the mornings with each passing book. It's been going on for a couple years now. I see no trend either way... it's just KPTV's turn to be on the upside, and KGW's turn to be on the downside. The opposite was true in May.

In my experience, they mean nothing because so many of the viewers are on vacation, etc. Staff too. I understand why KPTV is so excited.. they're winning a morning time slot for the first time in 2008. but come on guys, it's JULY! Your sales people don't care... and neither does anybody else. Let's talk in November, ok?

Yes, it's true that to salespeople it doesn't matter. But year to year trends are important. KPTV's 11pm appears to be doing quite well now, along with the 10pm show. That's a year to year improvement.

I knew KOIN would make a come back, look how strong they are dong.
Good job KOIN, sure Proud of You.

To "Ratings": What a cold, sarcastic and heartless comment regarding koin! You must be one of those who got let go a few years ago. I understand your bitterness, but - please, move on and realize that there are a few good, very hard working, talented people left at koin who want to compete, despite the crummy equipment that is falling apart. I see them out there working their butts off and doing the best they can, despite bottom-line owners who don't have a clue what good journalism is.
Another owner will come after this one has squeezed the station dry and sold off the remaining assets. Then maybe some hope again that the next one will be better, or at least less greedy.
I, for one, feel compassion for those people and I do watch koin regularly.

Like all things, television ratings are cyclical. I can remember when each KATU, KOIN, KGW and KPTV have been the ratings leader. Today, KGW is the ratings leader, and I don't find that as any surprise. I sincerely feel KGW does a very good job. But I also enjoy certain elements of KATU and KPTV. I'm not particularly fond of KOIN, but I do watch it from time to time.

When I was in high school (in the mid to late 80's), I believe "Oregon Magazine" published a report on television news in the Portland market. It was a good profile, taking about the world of television news in Portland. I haven’t seen anything similar published since -- and that was over 20 years ago.

The Oregonian rarely writes about local tv news. I have been in some markets where there are several articles a week. (The Chicago Sun-Times has a media column that runs almost everyday of the week!) Both Seattle papers covered local electronic media quite well in the 80's and 90's, but have backed off since.

Yes, weak management and ownership change has hurt. However, imho, there are some things they can do to get out of the rut. 1. Change brand to "CBS 6". 2. New, more contemporary set. 3. Move Katie to 5:30. 4. Run 30 minutes at 5 and 6, syndicate 6:30 with an infotainment show.
