KATU.tv Up for Auction

Submitted by LynnS on Fri, 07/18/2008 - 12:24pm.

According to IT consultant Andy Purdy, a whole bunch of US TV stations are so asleep at the switch they're about to lose their .tv domain names at auction:

Highly-prized 4-letter domain names using the call letters of 285 U.S. TV stations -- including major affiliates of ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX -- will be auctioned to the public by GoDaddy.com between Saturday, July 19, and Wednesday, July 23.

The TV call-letter domain auction is the largest ever of its kind. Releasing the domains to anonymouse [sic] bidders around the world may have a serious impact on how American broadcasters maintain their online identity, particularly in light of the upcoming switch to digital broadcast.

The call-letter domains represent some of the most successful broadcast stations in the country, including 2 NBC owned-and-operated stations -- WCAU-TV Philadelphia and WTVJ-TV Miami -- and 3 CBS owned-and-operated stations -- KPIX-TV San Francisco, KTVT-TV Dallas/Ft. Worth, and KCCO-TV Minneapolis/St. Paul.

Who cares locally? KATU. Nope, never bothered to register KATU.tv. It appears to be the only Fisher-owned station on the list. No other Oregon stations are on the list, but KOIN station owners New Vision and KGW owners Belo are losing two each, KPTV/KPDX owner Meredith is losing one, and KRCW owner Tribune is losing a whopping three--if they don't pony up at the auction.

I wasn't aware that KOIN had an internet presence?
Does KOIN know what the internet even is?

KOIN was actually one of the first stations in Portland to embrace the internet. Remember koin6000.com?

Submitted by .Chris on Sun, 07/20/2008 - 4:58pm.

at that time koin was in what? 2ed or 3rd place? KATU was like in first KGW in second

Koin is an OK station but its becomming like KATU did along 2002-2007 just a very basic bland news cast ugly graphics, or they get new ones and they mess them up like K2 did in 2006

Looks to much like a word press document now with the color templetes. How about doing a website that actually matches the stations ID and graphics. I know fisher has all the sites look the same, but they had all the stations look the same with the puzzle "2" graphics from 2000 to just recently. Now they are branching out. I think its time to do the same with the sites.

But keep KATU.com navagation the same, I didnt like the old sidebar nav.

...a certain local weather person reportedly registered the logical ".com" domains for competing television stations.

Little did they know -- until the time came to start a site.

I remember it firsthand.

It was Jim Little. He took great pleasure when each news director or station manager called him begging for the domain name. A bit strange, but entertaining.

"'Little' did they know"... was so clever.

Nothing so deflating as sitting around looking wise without actually being wise. Sigh. Off to Allegedly Clever Person's Anonymous meeting.

You would think some one covering TV news would have the .tv domain purchased.
Ultra maroon!

TV is not my business, and I cover more than the TV biz. I can't cover all the TLDs that might be available; I don't have that kind of money.

I'd been meaning to buy .mobi anyway, so I took 'em both.

If something like this went to court, wouldn't the holder of the domain actually need to demonstrate they're doing something with katu.tv rather than just sitting on it and hoping that Fisher will cave in to the extortion?

I have no problem snapping up names if you have a legit use for them, but slimy squatters, opportunists, speculators and profiteers should be beaten with clubs.

happens all the time on the net not just for this

Unless people are trying to go to the KATU site by typing "katu.tv" and having trouble finding the real site, there's no problem with KATU owning the .com only.

Also, to the comment upthread, the web isn't TV, and there's no need to use the same graphics on both. In fact, I think a problem with station websites is that they treat their sites too much like extensions of their TV stations. For example: story selection. Before a station makes something their top story online, they should ask themselves, "Have we ever seen anyone bother to blog about a story like this?" Because the emotional story that keeps someone watching till the next commercial break on TV isn't what is going to get you linked and put in people's bookmarks online. The kid who died yesterday isn't big news online. The approval for a new neighborhood development is.

If you're not a TV station, not that big a deal. But if you **are** a TV station, and your call letters are "K***," you don't want a rival TV station owning K***.tv, or anyone else owning it either, even if you yourself don't intend to use it. You want a Russian company putting up the worst kind of porn on K***.tv? And lest you think that's an exaggeration, there are Russian squatters that do exactly that; it's happened to people in my direct acquaintance (ie, not friends of friends but people I help out with Internet troubles). Happens all the time with expired domains especially. Their hope is to embarrass you into buying back the domain for some exorbitant fee ($2,000 in one case I was involved in), and if they don't, well, they've got a good domain full of porn and that'll make them some money either way.

Sounds like a new "revenue stream" idea from HQ in Seattle.

It would add a whole new meaning to Two On Your Side.

URLs are much less important these days. There are enough top level domains out there (.com, .org,.tv, etc) that most people just go to Google first so they get to the right place. Especially now that Icann is loosening restrictions on top level domains (there will soon be a lot more).

Will it make KATU look a little silly if KATU.tv gets snapped up? Maybe. But it won't mean any less traffic to the KATU site.

Submitted by LynnS on Mon, 07/21/2008 - 5:44pm.

But I get emails every other day from confused viewers thinking they're writing KATU, KOIN, KPTV or KGW.

It's not just KATU. Wasn't there the mess a few years ago with the White House? Seems like they had .gov but didn't get .com, which, I believe, became a porn site. I never wanted to try it and see, the .gov site was interesting enough.

but liberal activism. Which for some, say the current White House occupant, is worse.

All of the stations are starting to aggravate their sites now so there is one site per station group based on DMA coverage or region. K---.com will relink to these new sites - like nworegon.com or some such. Guess it's the new wave of the internet future. Just like President Bush said, the internets ARE serious buiness!

The term you're looking for is "aggregate," but having built aggregators before, occasionally it can be aggravating. :)

Tribune is either selling and/or reorganizing almost everything it owns. It's new owner is making huge cuts at its newspapers in Los Angeles and Chicago. And I'll bet some of Tribune's television stations will be up for sale, if not already.
