It is growing abundantly clear that there are any number of Doubting Thomases lurking in the safety of their anonymity, afraid there may actually be an embryonic media progression gestating in the Mid-Willamette Valley. I understand the skepticism from the Portland elites - those who view all that lies between PDX and San Francisco as fly-over land, barely fit for human existence.
I have borne witness to the arrogance of a top-25 DMA. I have bemoaned, in public forums and in private discussions, the idea that residents of the ill-named Metro Area are filled with scorn for those they view as less fortunate fools residing south of Wilsonville. I understand provincialism is not limited to small burgs. Nay, it is more odious in the exurban megalopolis, creeping insidiously, coloring opinion, dividing those inside from those on the outs. It is an unfortunate fact of existence. Nothing said here will likely change the truculence of human nature.
It is known that many in the Portland area media outlets attended university in Eugene and Corvallis, but few north of Tigard will concede the fact. U of O and OSU diplomas are rarely found hanging on the office walls of Portland media moguls. The diploma is hidden - out of sight as though malignant. When asked, alums of these institutions mutter incoherently, hoping the questioner will find it in their heart to be gracious.
In spite of all that, interesting and exciting events unfurl south of Raleigh Hills on a regular basis. One with great potential has been alluded to previously in this blog - having to do with the possible supernova of Channel 52 in Salem. Alas, the rumor has been greeted by the Portland Glitterati with silence. Any display of curiosity is quickly and brutally silenced by the Taliban-grip of the Media aristocracy. It is all too sad.
