OMI Readers Attack In Style

Submitted by Hunter Thompson on Mon, 08/04/2008 - 10:38pm.

Once again, the average OMI reader displays his/her true colors and demonstrates why television, and Television News in particular, is in dire straits. After castigating this writer for excessive banality, utter vapidness, mind-numbing stupidity and for being a generally poor imitation of the real Hunter Thompson (may god rest his soul) one person who posts to the site asked:

“If this site had the capability to ignore, I would do so. (Does it have that capability?)”

The site owner and operator replied: “not yet But I'll look into it.”

So the truth has indeed surfaced as I suspected it would. OMI is a cabal of nitwit television employees. Cretins who fancy themselves as saviors of the public. The viewing audience is a brutish lot held in contempt by the media elites because, as everyone in the media knows, the public is a mere bunch of dupes, buffoons who must accept whatever we, the media, pour down their throats at 5:00, 6:00. 6:30 and 11PM.

Another attacker posted this piece of pure genius:

“After having to get through "Hunter Thompson's posts in other threads in order to find worthwhile posts by others,…”

So, I’d like to list just a few of the “worthwhile posts” that you may have missed as a result of having to do the difficult work of scrolling down your computer pages to get past mine.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In regards to the coverage of the Gearhardt plane crash, here’s what one genius posted:

“KPTV - 1st (I liked how the segment was well layed out, stuck to the point, no over used drama)
KGW - 2ed (some over used drama in my opinion. but still did an over all good job.)”

Now that is some insightful analysis, and careful spelling too. This person will likely be the next ND at KATU. Currently he operates the Chyron at KOIN.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Or how about this gem when the discussion whirled around the hiring of Kacey Montoya”

“It makes no difference to me if she used to do (almost) nude modeling. So what? That doesn't mean she can't be a good TV news reporter. Those pictures, though racy, just say that she's attractive enough to make money off her looks.”

Now here is a true media insider. This person has been so co-opted by the glitz and glamour of Portland TV that he/she can find nothing wrong with a News operation hiring an almost-nude model. This is important information that ought not be missed.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next, we read, from another illiterate named “Chris” about some issues he has with KGW. Note the careful attention to spelling.

“while they are good at their so called "invesgating" reports and promos, they need to lay off the over exragrating. oh and get some personalty in the newscasts! if they did that I wouldnt have a problem with KGW.”

There are few things in life as rewarding as KGW’s "invesgating" reports. However, KGW apparently has a problem in their tendency to “over exragrating.” This is annoying to many viewers and Chris will likely make Station Manager as a result of his analytical abilities.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here’s a crucial posting having to do with an anchor woman’s battle with breast cancer, not a pleasant topic, but one that requires taste and decorum. Here’s what Anonymous Source had to say on the subject:’

“how come theres been continual updates on kathi goertzen on sister station komo but nothing much on shellie??

Apparently Anonymous Source is concerned about multiple peoples’ breasts. This posting demonstrates that absolutely NOTHING is sacred to News personnel. There is no privacy. There is nothing too personal. There is nothing out of bounds for the ghouls in the Newsroom.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When the earth-shattering news about KPTV adding another two newscasts to its broadcast schedule hit the OMI site, here’s what one Anonymous Source had to say:

“People who don't want to work for what they're being paid don't have to. It's a free country. You worry about your bank account, and I'll worry about mine.”

This guy sounds like some Calvinist preacher or an Ayn Rand sycophant. You wouldn’t want this dude as your boss.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With the passing of Tim Russert, many media types poured on the praise like fake butter on theater popcorn. At the OMI website, here’s what TALPDX said. His statement says it all about Media insiders:

“He (Russert) didn't try to overly intellectualize issues, which is unusual for a
personality out of Washington DC.”

When you think about it, nobody really wants to over-intellectualize the News. Heaven forbid we should be allowed a thorough understanding of the world’s critical issues. No, it is better just to have things candy-coated, don’t you agree?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the story about KGW adding a 7PM Newscast, there was much speculation, most of it banal. However, one writer named mfrk demonstrated perfectly (again) why television news is a black hole of emptiness. Here’s what he had to say:

“Lets hope they have a new look come 7pm. Otherwise it will be hour 1.5 of the same old same old with anchors and set. Maybe a different desk? Or have in-studio guests? They've got to change something up.”

Now, it may be that mfrk is a News Consultant. Consultants are always trying to sell stations on new Anchors and a new News Desk. And hey, how about in-studio guests? There’s a new and exciting concept. It would have been very troubling to miss this important post.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When the story broke about Ray Summers over at KOIN, tears flowed like water over Multnomah Falls on the OMI website. In what certainly must have been a mistake, one poster actually admitted the truth about current TV news when he said:

“It (Summers) reminds me of the days when we could actually feel good about what we put on TV.

Apparently feeling good about what one puts on TV is no longer considered important. But hey, it’s only TV.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And finally, just so you don’t think I’m picking on FOX 12, here’s a smattering of insight offered by KATU Insiders when they discovered that the incomparable Grant McOmie was whacked:

“I've seen this type of reporting in other cities, and frankly McOmie just wasn't that great at it.”

“KATU should replace him with a daily prescription drugs segment.”

“He was let go because NO ONE watches those segments.”

“Did Derek Sciba get the ax too? He did a good job too. Anyone else think that he
resembles a young Tony Perkins in Psycho?”
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The grim reality – there it is folks – in black and white. These are the issues and the analysis that makes Portland TV the treasure trove of mediocrity that it is. So when you’re forced to scroll through something as thoughtful as my penetrating wisdom in order to read those other “important posts,” remember that as ye sow, so shall ye reap.

That's the sound of hundreds of OMI users ignoring your incessant bloviating. Grow up, troll. Mattathias Schwartz of the NYT will NOT soon be calling you for an interview.

I'm honored to be included in your latest diatribe. Nothing screams success like having OMI's interminable joke Hunter Thompson call you out – it’s like listening to the class geek trying to make a funny -- but nobody laughs and then he gets beaten up after class. We should give the old nerd credit. Anyone willing to read through old OMI posts in his effort to bolster his position as class blowhard deserves a little extra credit.
