Pioneer Studio Square UPDATE: THE SQUARE LIVE AT 7PM

"I'm very pleased to announce that we have been approved to continue the march to increased localism in our programming efforts and will be launching a new show called "The Square Live at 7pm" in conjunction with our launch of the new HD Studio at Pioneer Courthouse Square the day after Thanksgiving.

Hosted by Stephanie Stricklen, this show produced out of news will be unlike any program ever produced here at KGW. We are now firmly in the 21st century, we are very fortunate to have this new downtown studio, and we're taking over a very important access time period with a totally new concept at KGW NewsChannel 8.

To flow existing viewers from our early evening newscasts into the show, coupled with creating new viewership for us in the time period, it cannot look like, feel like or be like any other news program on our air. The team on the show have been given the challenge to make this broadcast completely new, different and mindful of the opportunities to integrate all of our platforms, be relevant to a wider, less traditional news audience and be enterprising in everything that we do. We are concepting something completely unique and it is very exciting...

Interesting that this will be produced by the news department but isn't going to look or feel like news...

Now the rest of those dedicated to increasing localism will have to follow suit. Should improve the 7:00 PM time slot - we hope.

Did Christiane Amanpour really visit the OMI site. This place is more influential than I thought.

Remember, this annoucement was made to a newsroom and other KGW staffers. The typical Newsroom employee has no concept of word usage. Remember, they are in the moving picture business. Words get in the way.

What other departments are there? Don't worry about sports. What...? An entertainment department or something?

It'll be a new-news. Whatever that means. Steph will do a great job.

Conceptualization may indeed be very exciting. Think back to the Immaculate Conception, or was it the Immaculate Concepting? Perhaps the notion of concepting developed as a result of the perception, or misperception of those attempting conception in the conceptual phase. It is all very exciting.

Of KPTV's Better but at 7 p.m.? That is what it sounds like to me with the whole it can't look, feel or be like any other news program on their air.

Is this a pyroclastic flow of viewers or will there be large clouds of ash?

I admit I haven't watched the late-late after Olympics Channel 8 news -- dang jobs -- but I caught it tonight.

Joe Becker was spoiling the results of events to be shown later tonight (as in after 1 a.m.).

Isn't it bad enough that NBC is tape-delaying all this stuff for the West Coast? I have been avoiding CNN, ESPN, and others online to not spoil the results. Now I can't even watch NBC local news without being spoiled on upcoming tape?

What's the point of watching past the local late-late Channel 8 news then?

Sorry, but I turned it off tonight before I heard who won what, but it just made me scratch my head. Anyone want to explain the thinking there? I really am curious -- I don't work in TV news.

I will say KGW did a great job tonight on the Canby train wreck -- they talked to a passenger and were on scene at an accident that happened late. Anyone else see if the other locals had live shots of this?

Submitted by Myhousemf on Sat, 08/16/2008 - 12:46am.

KATU had a live shot with some sort of interview.

There seems no point at all.

Submitted by Freelancer on Sat, 08/16/2008 - 10:56am.

Actually the news portion is nice, because I don't want to switch channels and miss the Olympic coverage.

But I question the Olympic sports coverage, if you are watching the Olympics you already know what happened -- and spoiling the upcoming sports is just silly.

I know you were being snarky 5:36 a.m. -- someone get up too early?

Judging by the memo, they have no idea what they'll be doing at Square.

If it's going to be completely different, are we to expect a news show with no fluff?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sat, 08/16/2008 - 9:57am.

Given the paucity of any "real" news in PDX, fluff will lead.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 08/17/2008 - 5:44am.

Of course fluff will lead. Not much else to talk about except the human condition.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Sun, 08/17/2008 - 12:43pm.

You can expect there to be some fluff. After all, it is the 7PM Access slot, normally chockablock with fluff. Anything KGW does will be better than most fluff now available.

Where (in relation to the steps or Starbucks) is the studio going to be located. And is there that much of a crowd hanging out at the Square at 7 p.m. most evenings?

In the old Powell's Travel Books space. SE corner of the square, Yamhill & 6th, facing towards the Pioneer Courthouse and Macy's. Opposite corner from Starbucks. Directly east of and somewhat below the steps. Studio is slightly below surface level.

Is that the old Tri-Met office that was underneath the waterfall thingie? Haven't been to the square in years (I think the last time was in 2002 when the Olympic Torch passed by) so wasn't sure where Powell's was.

Submitted by rifleman69 on Tue, 08/19/2008 - 2:39pm.

Looking at a map, it's not the Tri-Met office but still "underneath" the square so to speak.

Putting on makeup...for HD...at 1501 SW Jefferson...then, what, all hopping in a van together for the Square? At 4:00 AM?

Still I think it's pretty cool. I know the space well..the old Powell's Travel store in the SE corner, right at 6th and Yamhill, stones-throw from the old courthouse, umbrella man, and elephant ears...

My suggestion: kick it off on tree-lighting night.

Steph's going to rock on that show.

After reading your comment, I remember that you were that wino dude who was always hanging at the Square. If I recall, you got busted for exposure to a group of boy scouts from Raleigh Hills.

Why anyone in their right mind would put that bubblehead on a show is beyond comprehension.... Did you see her segments during the olympics ????

You mean the "I can't do anything with my hair so I'll wear the same cheap black headband thingie"? The national people that KGW used were miles above Stephanie, it's not even funny.

Steph's 7pm show will NOT be a traditional newscast. Look for something that will focus on local nightlife, etc. You don't need a strong Journalist for that kind of show - just a lot of personality.

Per your map it appears the studio is shaped as a bike? How Portland of them.

LOL! (Methinks you should take a break from the Starbucks!) But an excellently Portland comment.

Some time ago the Powers-that-be wanted the PS Studio to open for the Olympics, than it turned into the November book, followed by the unveiling Friday after Thanksgiving... Now it seems that this project is more than mired in the mud and won't be completed and on the air until well after the new year.

Anyone notice they stopped running those "Studio on the Square" promos...

I'm changing my standing in the PS Studio pool from the first of the year to May sweeps.

Other than a location change, I haven't heard how the new 7pm show is going to be affected.

Ah, the continuing saga of government bureaucracy and a TV station...

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 09/08/2008 - 6:31am.

I haven't seen much PR for it. Anyone know who is anchoring/reporting what shows? I assume Shauna and Wayne will continue w/ the 10 and 11?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 09/08/2008 - 10:25am.

When everyone is working it will look this way I think.

4-5 Wayne and Kim and Mark

5-6 Shauna and Kim and Mark

8-9 Wayne and Shauna w/ Drew weather

10 Wayne and Shauna w/ Mark

11 Kevin Coari solos (don't know if it's Mark or Drew)

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 09/08/2008 - 1:56pm.

Is this anchor lineup confirmed or just a guess? Just wondering, because it seems interesting that Kevin would move to weekdays just to anchor a single half-hour newscast at 11pm... unless he'll also be serving as an evening reporter.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 09/08/2008 - 3:17pm.

He's moving M-F. Well deserved. He'll report for most of the evening shows, in house, and anchor the 11pm. He'll also be the first fill in when Wayne, Shauna, or Kim are off.

Let's start with KPTV's new 5pm. Will it beat either KATU or KOIN by November? I say not quite, but it will get a 3 or so. How about KGW's 7? Since there are no newscasts to compare it to, will it do as well as the show it replaces? Not that it really has to I'd guess. How about KPTV's 8pm? Will it beat the 0.8 that its past My Network Prime got? I think it will, but maybe not by much. I think it's a good move but will need time to find an audience. 3 years from now it could be pulling a decent number.. maybe a 3.0. But by then, that might hurt its 10 O'Clock News product.

And finally can KPTV hold onto 2nd place at 11 in November? Again, I say no but maybe 3rd. First run programming will have to help KOIN. If I'd have to guess, I'd say KATU barely nips KPTV in November giving FOX 12 a 4th place finish.
