Whither Air 12?

Submitted by conniehm on Wed, 09/24/2008 - 7:15am.

What has happened to Ch12's chopper? No mention of it has been made on air, and Officer Tony has been doing his reports from the studio. Ditto Bill Diaz in the afternoon.

Lynn here: I'd been working on this but flat-out ran out of time; I've got a lot of chainsaws in the air at present. I got a tip Monday that Hillsboro Aviation's copters (including Air 12) had been grounded by the FAA, but the FAA says not so; their Seattle PIO said Hillsboro was "under surveillance," but not even under investigation let alone grounded. And that's where I had to leave it in favor of the rest of my life.

Air 12 is now KPTV's helicopter only; KOIN has ended its sharing agreement and is officially out of the chopper biz. Photogs will be going up in charters only on very special occasions indeed. Or so I hear.

I heard that KPTV and KOIN couldn't agree on a sharing agreement.. so KPTV is without a chopper until Nov when they'll have their own. KOIN still has the old Air 12 and can use it when they want. No grounding or anything shady... at least as far as I know.

Coming soon... a new Air 12. The chopper sharing agreement between KOIN & KPTV ended in August. KPTV has a new agreement in place to lease its own chopper, but that agreement doesn't begin until later this fall.

In the meantime, get used to seeing the "Traffic Center" in KPTV's newsroom.

As for KOIN, I believe Lynn is correct. NewsChopper 6 is dead, and with flying costs as the are now, I doubt KOIN will resurrect it.

As I heard, Hillsboro had a helicopter in Texas that got ramped checked by the FAA. They (The FAA) did not like what they saw and placed a call to the Hillsboro(FSDO), Flight Standards District Office and alerted them as to what they found in Texas so the FAA took a hard look at the maintenence practices at Hillsboro Aviation. The director of Maint.,The Chief Inspector and the Director of Ops were all asked to resign. As of right now, all airplanes and helicopters are grounded pending conformity checks, nothing is flying. I belive the shutdown was by choice.
We will be hearing more about this in the days and weeks to come..............

KPTV has a nw agreement with Heli-Inc of St Louis for a Bell Jet Ranger III (I think for 5 Years.) Heli-Inc has hired the pilot for the job that starts in Late October. By the way, the new KPTV Helicopter pilot will be the first Women ENG pilot for Portland!

As for KOIN, Their agreement with Hillsboro is OVER but they have another short term agreement for 10 hours per month. Do not know how long it will last. Last I heard the were negotiating with several companies on a full time helicopter but that could have changed.

KATU and KGW both own their Aircraft and nothing has changed.

No wonder it's been so quiet around here. I live very near the Hillsboro airport and it's been quite noticable lately that there are few, if any, helicopters in the air. Usually, they're flying patterns all day, every day.

Seems odd that this info hasn't been reported anywhere that I've seen -- not even the Hillsboro Argus (which of course is just a mini-Oregonian).

Sounds like a bona fide news story.

Does KPTV's chopper have their logo on it? If so I think I saw it off of Cornell near Costco in hillsboro

KPTV is "going green".

Every hour that the copter is in the air burns 29+ gallons of aviation turbine fuel; the copter can stay aloft for three hours and has a 91 gallon fuel tank.

I can see the headlines..."We're parking OUR gas guzzler to make YOUR environment just a little cleaner."

Of course, at $5/gallon for fuel + a $40 "callout fee" at Hillsboro's FBO, that's $495.00 just to fill up the tank. I assume the helicopter is in the air at least three hours a day just in the morning, and probably another three in the afternoon so that's $1,000 a day. Not to mention the actual copter costs, maintenance (a lot of it), pilot's costs, hangar/tiedown lease, etc.)

Where is she going?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 09/26/2008 - 5:32pm.

Well haven't you noticed that she is on the GDA desk less & less.
They have used in the field more, doing reports.

What I heard is that she's not making the numbers count. ?

Access Hollywood -- right where she belongs. Good luck Julie, we hardly knew ya!

From what I have heard in the newsroom is that Air 12 is getting a bunch of new toys setting it up for widescreen and such.

Which begs the question: Where is Thanh Tan at KATU?

Julie Grauert isn't going anywhere. Things are going well for GDO right now. It amazes me how inaccurate these blogs can be sometimes.

Submitted by LynnS on Mon, 09/29/2008 - 8:25pm.

I'm accurate at LEAST, oh, a quarter of the time.

Nick Winkler from KATU also quit. I hear he is talking to another station in town. I like his reporting style.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 09/30/2008 - 7:30pm.

Where did you hear that? He's already working back in Oklahoma.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 10/01/2008 - 7:35am.

Winkler didn't quit, his contract wasn't renewed. However, Thanh Tan quit. Walked right out in the middle of her contract.

What's with the revolving door of reporters over at the Deuce the last year or so?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 10/01/2008 - 7:49pm.

His contract WAS renewed, he just didn't like it. Big difference.

What revolving door? Who are you talking about?

Submitted by bigboy on Sat, 10/04/2008 - 12:08pm.

In the past 18 months: Corinna Allen, Derek Sciba, Than Tan, Nick Winkler are the ones I can name off the top of my head.

say it is not so. first we loose Kimberly in the morning and know Julie. How could she not be making the numbers, she is a good anchor, funny, and hot.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 10/17/2008 - 10:40am.

I'm not sure where this all started, but Julie will be on GDO at least until her contract is up. Kimberly has moved to the 4 and 5pm newscasts plus Better. No one is leaving the station.

Julie is not going anywhere. Numbers are GREAT!
