Obit: Former Oregon AP Editor Gordon McNab

Gordon McNab has died just shy of his 100th birthday:

Macnab spent many of his A-P years as its Oregon news editor.

Frank Wetzel, former A-P Oregon bureau chief, says MacNab was known for his integrity. Wetzel says Macnab could be testy and demanding of others, but he demanded it of himself as well.

Wetzel added: "He was just an outstanding newsman."

McNab retired in 1971, so you'd have to be a real old-time Insider to have worked with him. Still, 30 years in the Oregon press corps deserves a farewell from OMI.

Gordon also worked as a copy editor for Willamette Week when the paper was founded in 1974. I remember then-congressman Bob Duncan, a thrifty Scot himself, buying the coat off MacNab's back at the first party held in the paper's offices on the third floor of the Oregon Pioneer Building, 320 SW Stark St.
