Bend TV Developments

Submitted by pdxtvwatcher on Thu, 08/17/2006 - 12:59am.

On Wednesday, August 16th, Meredith Broadcasting announced the sale of KFXO (FOX 39 in Bend) to the News-Press Gazette Company -- the company that owns KTVZ (NBC 21) in Bend. So, Bend is getting a TV station duopoly and a new ABC station (KOHD) all in the next two months.

This sale means that all ties between KFXO and KPTV/KPDX in Portland will be severed. It's also likely that KFXO's four-month old News operation will be dismantled, as the larger and more-established KTVZ News operation will probably produce a 10pm newscast on KFXO from the KTVZ studios. Will KTVZ hire some/all of KFXO's people? Too early to say.

Also noteworthy is that Bend's new ABC-affiliate, KOHD, is scheduled to begin airing on September 19th. The current General Manager of KFXO is rumored to be headed over to KOHD to be the General Manager there, and a News Director has been hired as well. I don't know if KOHD will be ready to launch newscasts on that day or not. Either way, Chambers Communications (KOHD's owners) will likely get several resumes from soon-to-be ex-KFXO staffers...

According to a subscription TV job search site, the planned newscast launch is in Spring of 2007.

Do Bend residents even care about this?

My husband & I have been watching KATU/Portland for 25 years. The new KOHD/Eugene? is awful.
KATU is professional, current, and always included
includes Central Oregon.

This sucks.

When I subscribed to
Bend Broadband I got ABC World News from Portland. Now with the KOHD launch(?) I can no longer get ABC World news. If KOHD is an ABC affiliate why is World News being withheld from BBB viewers?

Sent in by a Faithful Bend Correspondent (so yeah, I think they care), this story on the new duopoly; our correspondent points to the final paragraph:

KTVZ, however, won't have the local Bend television market to itself for more than a month. Chambers plans to launch a local ABC affiliate with its FCC license, and broadcasts are slated to begin Sept. 9. KFXO's [Jerry] Upham, who is leaving his current station to join Chambers' KOHD-ABC, said the station is expected to have local news starting as soon as spring 2007. The station will run news from KEZI, Eugene's ABC affiliate, in the meantime.

So, not a rumor; Upham goes to the new station from KFXO.

Who just moved back to Oregon only a few months ago to head up the fledgling news operation at KFXO?

Looks like 12's weather crew is off the hook? Too bad for Bend because they had the best weather guy, Mark Nelsen, doing their's.

Yes, probably no one at KPTV is going to be complaining about it.
All through the 90's it was KOIN doing KPDX's 10pm, then KPTV doing KFXO's 10pm the last 2 years, and now KTVZ weather people can get to know the phrase..."that damn FOX show gets in the way of my weathercast".

Why is the Martha Stewart Living not being carried by this new ABC affiliate?

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Fri, 09/22/2006 - 11:39pm.

Martha is a syndicated show, not an ABC program. It could be carried by a station with any affiliation. KATU just happens to be an ABC affiliate.

Why isn't this channel being broadcast for those of us who don't have cable?

It is broadcast in HDTV, but only in the new television standard on digital channel 51.1
All stations will be required to convert as of February 2009.
New tv's and old ones with a digital tuners attached can get the signal over the air.
