what?

The "A" team are the folks you normally see on weeknights--Shauna and Wayne at 12 and Steve and Natali at 2, for instance.

From what I understand Fox12 wanted the whole anchor team in to try and crush the competition. So that meant Wayne and Shauna in at the desk and Hilary and Kevin reporting. If the weather had co-operated, honestly that's a lot of face recognition going on for the viewers.

Bringing in the main anchor team for snow coverage doesn't do much for ratings. Last night is a good example. KGW had football and KPTV still got absolutely CRUSHED by KATU at 5PM. Their 10PM news finished 3rd in its time slot. Now, if you just want viewers to see your "a" team on the desk for the big story -- well.. that's different but I don't think this storm qualified. BTW, how do you think Kevin and Hilary felt getting bumped? Weekenders already feel like 2nd class citizens, no sense proving it to them when "the big story" comes along.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 11/27/2006 - 8:28pm.

My understanding is that the main anchors came in Sunday night due to a lack of available reporters. KPTV needed Kevin and Hilary to report because the other KPTV reporters were "unavailable". So, Wayne & Shauna got the call to come in and anchor so that Kevin & Hilary could be reporters #2 and #3. If Wayne & Shauna hadn't come in, KPTV would've been in a pinch with just 1 reporter on a busy news night.

Why not have them go out and report and keep Kevin and Hilary on their show?

Submitted by Myhousemf on Tue, 11/28/2006 - 10:57pm.

Yeah. 2 reasons...

1) It isn't fair to Kevin and Hilary.

2) It would be nice to see them reporting for a change.

Reporters #2 and #3 were out on special assignment...filming their next Fox12 report, "So You Want To Be A Porn Star?" I'm looking forward to it. Besides, there's only so much room for trucks and bodies on the Sylvan overpass.

The problem may have been KPTV thought this was a major story and the viewers felt KATU would give them the story without the theatrics. Good thing 12 was on the air at 4:30am to tell us it was snowing!

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 11/28/2006 - 10:33am.

5a theatrics 3.2 vs katu 2.0
6a 7.1 3.0
7-9 11.8 3.1

late night
theatrics 10.7 (10pm) 5.0 11pm vs. katu 5.1 (11pm)

maybe views thought about it and realized they didn't get the story from katu afterall on sunday so they switched back to kptv on monday.

oh.. and at 4:30... 2.3 (which was better than your 5am hour.)

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Tue, 11/28/2006 - 2:26pm.

Maybe viewers trust the morning anchors more than the 10 O'clock anchors. It looks like Good Day Oregon beat the 10 O'clock news on Monday if I'm reading the numbers right.

6.4.. vw. AMNW 2.7

For a moment I thought you meant B.A. Baracus and Hannibal "I love it when a plan comes together" Smith at the anchor desk. Perhaps, Crazy Murdoch could do live shots from Sylvan.

yes, enough to throw traffic into a cocked hat. Nowhere near enough here in the foothills of Mt Tabor (300 ft); the kidlets are bereft and forlorn.

Submitted by Myhousemf on Mon, 11/27/2006 - 9:12pm.

I was watching KOIN at 6 and was quite surprised!

KOIN had 2 weather people on air.

Alexis Del Cid closed her report saying "Alexis Del Cid, KOIN News.com" (and she said KOIN News.com)

They had team coverage with a 3 box.

They had their traffic reporter there.

I think KOIN is doing ok. They are trying to use what they have been given in a effective way.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Mon, 11/27/2006 - 11:18pm.

first: the second weather anchor is a moron and should be in market 190, not 23.
second: the traffic girl goes to fast and is not clear. her voice also really annoys me.
third: were you drunk? the technical difficulties (AGAIN) tonight were extremely noticeable. wrong camera shots. bad audio. anchors confused.

koin is a nightmare and the new nd is a joke.

Why did KPTV bring in Wayne and Shauna and send Kevin and Hilary to report? If they were down reporters, why didn't they have Wayne and Shauna report? Since that is Kevin and Hilary's regular show?

I think that Wayne and Shauna are a good combination. If the station brought the two in because they were short reporters, it's only natural to have your primary anchor team actually anchor the newscast while bumping the weekend anchors to the field. I don't feel bad for Kevin and Hilary one bit. That's what happens when you aren't at the top quite yet. Would people be as irritated if Pete and Kim bumped Chad and Jamie on the weekend morning show? Probably not. That's the nature of the business. Maybe one day Hilary and Kevin will be primary anchors somewhere and won't have to worry about actually reporting. On a side note, I think Kevin C. is a better reporter than anchor anyway, so I prefer to see him in the field (like Joe Becker).

Now I am going to preface this by saying I have a 2-year-old and she rots my brain with Elmo songs everyday.

Which is why I can't remember who, but I think it was Matt Zafino on 8 that said because of El Nino we probably won't have a snow event this year.

The statement was said two weeks ago -- and as I look out my window watching the snow fall, it makes me giggle.

Weather in the Northwest has got to be hard to predict. It's a job I wouldn't want.

Oh and hats off to all the people who are stuck standing out in this stuff for live shots.

Submitted by TheDynamo on Tue, 11/28/2006 - 12:31pm.

Used the term "onslaught of snow" describing a flurry that neither stuck to anything nor caused any major disruption of traffic on Monday. Now THAT's telling it like it is ;). Of course by the time I was viewing it, it was probably his 80th live shot for the morning and he was tired of saying "intermittent flurries".

I guess I'm old enough to remember when even severe weather was relegated to the "weather segment", but I don't blame today's local news stations for covering it "up front".

Severe weather, whether it be tornadoes in the midwest, or snow in the northwest, affects more viewers than almost any other story. Yes, it should be the lead. My problem is when the coverage becomes repetitive and cumbersome. That is the kill cue. So many stations miss this cue and start losing audience. A good ND will be able to know where this kill point is. Unfortunately, have not seen it recently.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 11/29/2006 - 12:43am.

Hello. Wayne and Shauna would have looked like they were demoted if they were out anchoring. They're the faces of the station. Sorry, but they make too much money to put on snow boots and get cold or wet. Viewers would be more confused to see that.

KPTV reporter pours water on the pavement to see if it freezes.
Everyone describes the weather is "bone chilling cold". its in the 20's. Of course in North Dakota that means MINUS 20 F.

I know people watch because of weather, and i suppose you have to dumb the news down for your dumb audience.

But is this what you went to school for? Edward R. Murrow never stood in a half inch of snow on an overpass predicting the end of the world.

It is sad. Both KGW and KPTV did the 3 P's of protecting yourself from killer 20 degree weather... pets, pipes and ... well i forget. But i am sure it was important. it may have proctology, because the people who decide on this lame programming have their head up their ...you know.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 11/29/2006 - 11:12am.

Did you see the ratings for the last couple of days? In some cases, they're double what you'd normally see. Viewers watch -- so we keep it comin'. Even the "people who have their head up their..." can figure out that one. Keep griping -- but it won't change.

Submitted by Anonymous Source (not verified) on Wed, 11/29/2006 - 1:41pm.

I rarely watch Fox 12, but I tuned in last night for a few minutes to catch the weather (the best part of the 10 o' clock news IMO), and stuck around for some of the "Final Cut". I really think that someone should invent a charge of "Contributing to the Delinquency of Society" for the crap that I saw on Fox12 last night. Senior Citizen Mexican Prostitutes? WTF? Is that newsworthy? Answer: It's Not. What's next? One-legged Peruvian Stripper Meth Dealers? If that's what brings in ratings, then I'm very ashamed to be part of the viewing public and lament where society is heading.

My last rant (Quite honestly, I very rarely rant about anything) is the unrelenting self-promotion I'm seeing. With the coverage afforded to American Idol on Fox12, you'd think world affairs and the lives of millions hinges on every aspect of that show. Same with the segment on 'House' last night. I'm betting the book that was being promoted in that story was published by a Fox sub-company. The fact is, there is nothing news worthy for at least 1/2 of the 10 o' clock news. It's all self-promotion/disguised advertisements served by NEWS anchors under the guise of "news".

For every program cross promotion I see on other news broadcasts, I swear I've seen 3 to 4 on Fox. It's pathetic, and it's ultra-pathetic (for society) if it leads to increased ratings.

No wonder I get most of my news elsewhere.

They're giving away Guns N' Roses tickets during their newscasts! As long as I can dial fast -- I'm going to see Axl. Thanks KPTV! You guys are the best.

Since ratings are all that matters why not broadcast the 10 'o Clock News from a strip club? Sex sells, doesn't it?

Listen, I could care less what Fox 12's ratings are. It doesn't appear that they are blowing other stations out of the water (what are they, 2nd now overall to KGW?). My beef is that they've given up their integrity, and don't seem too apologetic about it. So much for holding yourself to a higher standard.

The thing is, there are some talented folks at Fox 12. It sucks to see them set-up as sales people selling the latest American Idol, or pitching some swill about things that have no bearing on anyone, but is just shocking and disgusting enough to bring eyes to the screen. Hell, they'd have to pay me EXTREMELY well to do that..and/or I'd have to turn off any sense of journalistic integrity I have.

Why not just brand the 10 o' clock news as entertainment? Clearly its news content is limited only to the first half of the show. The second half is nothing but waterskiing squirrels, eating contests and viral videos all of us have already seen.

I LIKE the free stuff. Every station should do give-aways during their newscasts. It's like a game show with meth labs and murders mixed in.

I'm getting a headache trying to figure out the premise of that story, or for that matter why it was even written.

I can hear the editorial meeting at the Columbian now: "We need a piece on the weather problems. What? There were no weather problems? Hm. How about a piece on the fact that there were no weather problems... even though no one forcasted there would necessarily be weather problems. Brilliant!"

Here's the deal:

If you produce actual news, I may watch it. As it is, you're irrelevant.

To the above comment, "I like game shows mixed in with meth and murders". LOL.

That is what our local news has become. Biting sarcasm based on reality! Unfortunately, I have the feeling this will go from being funny to being reality in the next decade. Now, that is NOT funny.
