Also via PDXRadio, Beavers football is moving to KPAM for 2007. KEX apparently lost a bidding war.

Big loss for KEX? How? What value does carrying college sports hold for the radio station? As I understand it, it's a net revenue loser for the station. All you have are bragging rights and does anyone really care about that - expect the very small sports audience?

It mattered enough that there was a bidding war.

Do you know that as a fact there was a bidding war? I know that KEX was getting $ to broadcast the games. Now KPAM is going to pay $ to have them. Seems to me KEX is the winner for not offering to pay a crazy licensing fee to run the games - thus disrupting the regular line up.

Wow. They finally figured out a way to get me to tune into KPAM.

Anonymous 8:23 is an example of why it's kind of a big deal. The Beavers, like the Ducks and any big state football program, are a cume magnet. People find you, and you hope they stick around and become listeners. Might be good medicine for KPAM, and they need it.

is that they hitched their wagon to the radical right-wingers who are so on their way out it isn't funny. actually it IS funny, and a joy to see them lose listeners (and viewers...see FOX News numbers).
The addition of OSU is a step away from the haters and one in the right direction.

OSU asked for the moon and stars.

KEX said no -- OSU was sucking up too many avails under the old deal anyway, and adding OSU baseball (approximate potential listening audience in Portland: zero) would have made the situation even worse.

KPAM said yes.

KEX screwed up, that's the bottom line. They took the attitude in talks with the university of basically "Oregon State has been here forever. They'll never leave."

Word is that they were stunned when they were told that the Beavers were leaving. However, the stand they are taking to folks on the outside is that OSU wanted too much and they really weren't that important to the overall health of the station. College sports are a cume magnet. That's what is really going to hurt KEX and help KPAM.

Where was "The Fan" in all of this ? Isn't it an all sports station ?

It'll help KPAM more than it'll hurt KEX, particularly if baseball is involved. If OSU was requiring the local affiliates to carry baseball, those are late afternoon games starting in February, when KPAM's on night pattern and nobody can pick them up anyway. Obviously where it'll help KPAM is when football rolls around, and those are weekend day games. The trick for them will be to convert the football cume into Miller listeners. But as the season goes on, the night pattern starts eating into morning drive, making KPAM's signal really irritating and hard to pick up. You gotta really love Bob to put up with the signal; I think his true fans have already found him anyway.
