Sound Scheme

Submitted by Farwest on Sat, 12/30/2006 - 1:34am.

Finally! Today was really the first time I heard this on KATU, but I do believe they "altered" their sound scheme (opening, commercial updates, closing, etc). Hmmm... It sounds... Aural - whatever that means. A little more smooth and "new age" sounding. I can't remember in my head how it sounds exactly - and the descriptors I just gave might be completely wrong, but I do know that they've made a change. If I'm not mistaken, I think KATU previously had a unique sound scheme for their First News At 4:30 broadcast. I never really got around to watching it much so I don't know what that sounded like. I think this update to their sound scheme was due.

I have not been able to hear the opening and closing sound segments yet. I have just heard the brief commercial breaks KATU makes leading on to what stories they will be covering at the next newscast. This could be a sign of a changing set. I unfortunately missed the 11PM news due to my parents monitoring FOX NEWS hours on end, seeking more information about Saddam's Execution.

Anyway, I hope I'm not mistaken about this claim. This does seem likely though... a way to prep for a new year.

UPDATE: This was part of a budget cut.

what news package/company is it?

Look under the topic "KOIN changes music again".

The reason has more to do with cutting costs than a new image. The licensing fees for the music they were using went up prohibitively and thus they dropped that and converted to a new one which costs less. The change was made this afternoon and will continue through the weekend. Since they changed the music, it gave them an opportunity to change other audio as well.

Where exactly does everyone find this information? I am awestruck by some of blogs on this site - so descriptive and detailed. Insider information possibly? THANKS!

Many of the commenters and blog posters are current or former media insiders. Hence the name "Oregon Media Insiders." ;)

Maybe they should pick up something from the Bugs Bunny/Road Runner show to go with their ads...I mean news.

I watch the newscast everyday and it is the same music as they used for all their other newscasts except AMNW is something different.

I’m a long time viewer of katu and all I read on this forum is people criticizing them. The new audio is great! Acknowledge it. Why do you have to go on and say something negative?

Does anyone know then who produces these schemes for news organizations? Several years ago I had found a site that had all these audio files of news organizations intros, closings, etc. Now I am unable to find such a site. Any help?

A *lot* of stations have dropped Stephen Arnold music in the last week or two, 64 so far.

A complete list can be found at: http://www.southernmedia-nmsa.com/sesacattack.php

I'm having some browser trouble tonight, so I may very well be. It was me. Thanks for finally putting more than just the URL in your comment so I could stop deleting them. :)

KEZI in Eugene changed their music, which had been the same music as KATU ("Pinnacle") for 6 years. What's up with stations leaving behind Stephen Arnold?

The company that controls the rights to Arnold's packages greatly jacked up the rates for 2007, so everyone's fleeing to cheaper packages.

Discussion here. Mostly by TV wannabes.

Well it's not identical to the site that I once saw, but thank you very much anyway. On the original website that I had visited a long while back, I was able to download the full "audio" with no voice-over (KATU "Pinnacle"). I still have that MP3 file, which, this sounding very... Mmmm... Nerdy... used to be my ringtone (weird, huh?). However, I browsed the original producers sites (like 615 Music and Score Productions) and found a great amount of media files for me to browse that are simply the audio compositions. I was able to extract the files I liked, converted from FLV to MP3, and save 'em for my own use. Thanks!

UPDATE: Ignore what I just wrote please. I hadn't clicked around the whole site yet before I typed this. By the way... SouthernMedia updated their site with all the stations that dropped Stephen Arnold Productions. And they have the new KATU transition theme, which, sounds very bad because it had been recorded from a TV. Thanks for everyone's help!
