A need for a volunteer?

Submitted by Nicole on Wed, 01/10/2007 - 6:51pm.

Okay, I hope I am not offending anyone with my questions. If so, please let me know. I like this site and don't want anyone unhappy with me. I just don't know who else to ask these?

Okay, here goes...Do the TV stations have a need for volunteers? If so, how does one get involved? I remember years ago, KATU had their 2 On Yourside consumer hotline and was told they were volunteers.

I am very interested in TV and in particular the Portland stations and would love to get involved some how.

Thanks!

The best way to get your foot in the door is to get an internship through a college or high school. Most of the stations should have internship info on their jobs page.

Other than that, I don't know if anyone has some sort of community affairs thing where they just need volunteers. Contact the human resource offices and ask.

Portland Community Media always welcomes interns and volunteers. www.pcmtv.org

Only broadcast volunteer opps I'm aware of are at KBOO, or answering phones for OPB pledge breaks. Unless you're interested in cable access, which is a whole 'nother ballgame.

KBOO is great to break in. Lot's of hands on experience in their newsroom.

Yep, KBOO is great as long as you fit into one of their minority categories... I tried volunteering a couple of years ago and they immeadiately gave preferential treatment to minority individuals... Nothing left for a 20-something white male...

Ironically, I wanted to be more of a engineering volunteer instead of a production volunteer, but they said they don't allow volunteers for engineering duties... OPB said the same...

Sorry to hear that you had a bad experience.

I've been an active volunteer for several years. I'm a white guy and have never seen any barriers based on race, gender, age, or any kind of "ism". There are lots of 20 something white males, being happy, participating, learning and contributing.

And the statement about volunteers not allowed in engineering is just flat wrong. Not sure if you are referring to board ops, or the hardware side of things, but volunteer opportunities exist in both of those areas.

KBOO is a Community Radio Station. To be successful, you have to become a member of the community. Figure out how to fit in, pitch in with you labors as needed.

Only a few months late in this reply, but just could not let this go unchallenged.

Just because there are some weird shows on "Cable Access'" air does not meen it is a bad way to get started. MECM in Gresham has a brand new studio and broadcast center that beats KATU, KOIN, and KGW. They also provide wonderful technical classes and you can meet some amazing people along the way and really learn a lot. It is also very inexpensive. Visit their site at www.metroeast.org Part of the local station/national stations problems: featuring one trashy show from cable access and us being human thinking: "oh...cable access, how lame" Well wake up- Because it's not like that. Good luck Nicole!

Not exactly....it is quite huge, but the cameras and some control room equpment isn't that great.

um....maybe they have changed but the last time I checked, you had to pay for classes (which most public access stations do around here) AND fees to use the equipment. Try www.tvctv.org The station manager is very nice and the facilities are great! And no equipment fees.

So, try out whatever one is closer to where you live.....

1. If you do go the Cable Access route, NEVER apply at a tv station with that as the only experience on your resume. Do other stuff too. Do stuff that is better than what you did at cable access.

2. 3 words ... internship, internship, internship!!!!! Hands down.

3. When you're ready, hold out for the right opportunity. If there's an opening in Traffic but you really want to work in production, don't take the Traffic job. You'll get labeled ... and it becomes very, very difficult to change departments.

Good luck
