Anyone seen this? Old PDX TV Clips

Submitted by Nicole on Tue, 01/30/2007 - 11:58am.

Have any of you seen this site? I did a search for Portland TV stations the other day and came across this. http://platypuscomix.cartoonsdammit.com/fpo/videos/

It is old TV clips, from the 80's and 90's. It even has old clips of Richard Ross, who anchored KATU News years ago. Check out the site, its really interesting! Thought you might be interested as well.

Oooh! You're right. That's a great site. It seems well updated too... With the name "Macy's" slashed out from in front of "Meier & Frank". I can't believe the studio of KATU looked like that... and they even had a News Wire running all night. I was born in 1990 and I can just barely remember Jim (Bozley?) as he said his final goodbye. Didn't he do AM Northwest and the weather during newscasts? Anyway, thanks for the link...

When you said "Old PDX TV clips", I thought you meant old. Like the '60's. But this stuff is fun too!

(going back to my nap in the rocker now)

The Mt. St. Helens first anniversary breast description is unbelievable!

Also, Tom Peterson's Christmas gift of free microwave cooking lessons is great.

For those of you with "asbestos undies" (direct from Lynn so I had to reference as quote), I posted on the pdxradio.net site and they're loving it, too. They've started to ID voices and folks on the radio ads.
Great web site for anyone who EVER was in any kind of Portland media. Even great for those who lived in PDX "back then".

I had memories of what KGW and KATU looked like back then, and for the most part the actual clips live up to my memories! How 'bout Ralph Wenge and Kathy Smith on that typical late 70's looking set...modern, but sparse. KATU looked pretty good...pretty nice for overall look and graphics for that era! When I have more time, I'm definitely going back to check out some of the spots! Whoever put this together, NICE JOB!

I even see some commercials I worked on. Pretty scary!!! I'm not that old, I'm still collecting on those free dinners for getting a new windsheild.

Anybody know where a KATU signoff that featured a montage of music and clips from around Portland and Oregon might be? I remember it from the late 70s and early 80s.

Thanks for remembering the KATU Oregon travelogue that was part of our sign-off for several years. The 4-minute segment debuted during the last week of August 1976 at the Portland Hilton during K-2’s fall presentation banquet, attended by over 400 media guests. Our chief photographer, Allan Anderson, had traveled all over the region shooting hours of aerial and ground 16mm film footage which I edited alongside director Steve Mueller. We didn’t have the luxury of computerized editing systems back then but used a pair of RCA VTRs and manually assembled the segment to Henry Mancini’s soaring “Symphonic Soul.

Wow, that's a revealing comment. Seems like there was waaaaayyyy more attention to craft back then. Can't imagine any of the above, such as the photographer traveling around to shoot non-crime scenes or a local station running a four-minute segment, happening today.

This is a great site. PortlandTube, anyone?

how those of us a certain age now look back at circa 1980 clips and get nostalgic. Wasn't 1980 just yesterday? The even funnier thing is that today's teens and 20-somethings have no recollection of this era and think of it as odd and unusual. Time marches on!

But my brain continues to fester in the 60's to 80's and I'm quite happy there.
Just don't distrub me.

Remember, I have good news!

I enjoyed seeing what was out there. As one who has lived in Oregon since the mid-80's, it brought back some memories.

There is another great site that deals with TV of the past. The site is called "Yesterday's KPTV" and can be found at http://kptv.home.comcast.net/kptv.htm

Anybody know what happened to Kim Gilbert??

I'm the guy that made the whole deal; I uploaded every video and wrote every article (including all the FBI Warnings, which I ran out of ideas for after a hundred videos...the newest ones have a different tag at the front.) And if you can believe it, I've got even more junk that I haven't uploaded yet (a bizarre PSA starring a mumbling Tom McCall, a second "Northwest State of Mind", and a news story from 1989 that mentions Ted Kulongoski, but only shows his back....among other things).

JR Miller: when you get that stuff up, I'd be honored to host it...can I do that? Let me know: platypuscomix5@yahoo.com

My webstats showed a lot of hits from here this morning, as well as from some other places that posted the link too, and that's how I found this site. I'm thrilled that this thing is finally getting discovered, as I partially made it to see if I could prove myself to people, get myself known and GET A JOB AROUND HERE. After graduating, I'm as unemployed as Nicole and without connections, I'm stuck. I hope somebody is reading this who might be interested in hiring me. If you like what you see, make sure the author continues to eat.

Oh yes, and everything else on the entire domain is also my creation. www.platypuscomix.net

Does anyone know, if there a site out there, where you can also hear the station's old openings and theme music? I am interested in knowing what they sounded like in the earlier days.

Submitted by Myhousemf on Thu, 02/01/2007 - 8:12pm.

This site has music from alot of US stations.

for this kind of thing. You can hear most of Portland and Seattle's themes from the past 20+ years.

Thanks. I have seen that site. I was wondering, something more like when Richard Ross was there and the one before they started using the ABC affilate theme. I believe, there was another one similar to the Spirit of Texas (or whatever its called) theme.
