A recent page one, main headline reads: Followed by the story: I always love shameless self-promotion in my papers, so if anyone else can find examples of media creating its own news and touting it as the biggest item of the day, I'd love to see or hear about them. ( topics: Daily Astorian )
... if it was done correctly, would've been amazingly valuable. It's the one thing that drives me nuts - the lack of background on how polls were conducted and the exact questions asked. My wife used to be in that business, so I'm attuned to it. Now if the whole "how we did it" article was "we called people and asked them questions" (which I'm afraid was probably what it was), then I'd be terribly frustrated. Read the editorial (7-20-07) of how well the paper is doing financially, how he shamelessly compares his paper to General Motors (!) and then look at page 2 where the rates are shown. Very quietly, without telling the subscribers, the rate of $27 per month has gone away, and now it's $30 per month regardless if you have a carrier deliver it or a motor route. Everyone knows the motor route is more expensive, and it costs the paper next to nothing to deliver with the kids (which are paid slave-labor rates of about half of minimum wage).
