KTVL in Medford was evacuated for five hours today when a man parked a "suspicious" graffiti-covered van in its parking lot:

Mark Allen Dickey, Cave Junction, has been identified as the white male who parked a suspicious looking van outside KTVL News10 this morning and then surrendered around noon-time. Various emergency response agencies were on-scene, including a command post, bomb squad and SWAT team. ...

The driver reportedly set off flares at approximately 7:20 this morning and continued to appear agitated throughout the morning. The SWAT team attempted to persuade the driver to get out of the van, but the driver refused. The man ultimately came out of the van with his hands held high and surrendered to authorities.

The Medford Mail Tribune reports:

He was “very angry and wasn’t going to be taken alive and (was) willing to die for his cause,

It's like some 1940s place or something. I applied for a job there once; didn't get the job and I never felt bad.

They need a *REALLLLY* big bulldozer to knock it all down. Then Weyerhauser should plant trees. Perfect erasure! :-)

Doesn't even have the good sense to make his stand in front of the #1 station in town.

maybe the #1 station is only the #1 station because of Neilsen's innadequate reporting practices. There are less diary's going out now than in 1970. hmmmmmm

is the number one station because more people watch them and more people watch them because they have a superior product.

He told our sales manager to get lost and "this is the real deal" when he asked the man what he was doing. Yes, the side of the van also referred to our psychiatric ward in town.

Nice to see the criminal loonies are spreading out down there in southern Oregon. When I worked in Medford, most of the crazies were from Shady Cove and White City. Wolf Creek was also a hotbed of nefarious activity, but you only went there at your own risk...

"Channel 10 viewers saw promos for local stations in Peoria, Ill., and Grand Rapids, Mich., among others."

GASP! What a scandal! Now the illusion has been broken!

I've seen where stations have gone off the air due to a power failure and they've sent a microwave truck up to the transmitter with a tape deck to roll material. Why not to a crude report using the truck as your booth and with a receiver you could do live shots. Again, I'm not that familiar with the terrain down there, but it can be done. =0

our transmitters are at very high elevations, accessible with snocats and snomobiles this time of year.

Forget remote trucks -- where were the cameraphones?

Ahhhhh Medford, haven't been back there since I left in 95. Something about happiness is Medford in the rear view mirror...

I believe their xmtr is on Mt. Ashland.

Lets not forget the Rinker incident in 96. While not targeted at KOIN, it did affect ops there... there's still evidence of the shooting at the top of the stairs heading down to the lunchroom. A small buldge in the drywall about 6 feet up.

I think there was also a shooting incident at KATU a few years before that, which lead to the heavy double doors that are there now as you enter towards the newsroom (and also why, if I remember correctly, why they moved the lunchroom).

I remember the KOIN coverage: "Terror in the Tower"

It is where it has always been since that section of the building was finished.........way back then. In the 70's. The outside window was removed, though.

Ah yes, been many moons since I worked there -- began radio in that building. Loved it's owner, Ray Johnson -- a real pioneer.

Yes transmitter on Mt Ashland. The building is a bit isolated from town.

Medford? My five years in Medford were great!
Interviewed 4 presidents, Hank Aaron, movie stars -- great climate, wild nightlife in Ashland. Great place to be a young professional. Rafting on the Rogue in the afternoon. Skiing on Mt Ashland, hiking at Crater Lake. Loved it.
