Trib: Best US Non-Daily Paper 2006 (Updated)

Submitted by LynnS on Thu, 02/08/2007 - 11:41am.

...according to the Inland Press Association. No press releases out either at IPA or the Trib yet, but I'm told Dwight Jaynes made the announcement in the newsroom yesterday at the paper's sixth birthday party, replete with champagne, cake and pizza.

Update: The story at the Trib.

I'm not sure what an award from the Inland Press Association is actually worth, but congrats to the Trib.

That's funny - how can you be the best non-daily newspaper in the country, and 4th or 5th best in your city. I would rank the WW, the Merc, and even Street Roots before the Trib.

Neither the Trib nor the IPA have put out press releases yet I could link to.

The IPA's top contest category is for non-daily papers of more than 10,000. The Trib has won before, too - it's on the masthead.

Kind of like the Blazers playing against Portland State in terms of funds available. Maybe the Trib should compete on a more level playing field so an award like this would mean something.

How can the Inland Press Association with 1,200 members name the 'best' newspaper. There are nearly 1,500 daily newspapers in the U.S.A. which doesn't even come close to the number of non-dailies out here.
Another organization, the NNA has over 2,500 newspaper members.
Would a better title for the award be 'Best Non-Daily Newspaper that pays yearly membership fees to the IPA'.

I'm not a Portland person, so would someone tell me if the Trib is a paid or free publication.
Paid and free papers are usually not in the same 'clubs', and would not be judged against each other. So really, two non-daily newspapers from Portland could be named the 'best non-daily' in the U.S. by different groups.

The IPA 1,200 membership is not just newspapers.

This "award" is a joke.

The Trib is so desperate for attention, it has to ballyhoo the joke.

It's the old one-hand clapping thing.

I've been a freelancer for the Tribune since its first year, and yet I hear about the office anniversary party here on OMI.

That says something, although I'm not sure what.

No doubt Clark and Pamplin celebrated by cutting salaries across the board and laying off two staffers.

The Trib beat out the Peninsula Gateway of Gig Harbour, Wash., and the Wednesday Journal of Oak Park, Ill., which finished second and third, respectively.
