Mt. Hood Climber

Hey, all. This isn't of utmost importance, however, I learned today that one of the rescued climbers on Mt. Hood this weekend was my very own Wilsonville High School sophomore English teacher last year, Kate Hanlon (as you can calculate, I am a Junior). It was crazy because in one of my classes today the teacher suddenly brought up the subject and everyone busted out with "OMG - Oh yeah, I heard about that!" (you know how it goes). I am generally a news junkie and know everything in the headlines before the majority of the people. I was definitely surprised to learn of my lack of knowledge as to one of my own teachers being part of a national media spotlight. Just thought I would share. She is expected to be back at school before the end of this week.

Because none of the climbers wanted their identities released until all were safe and accounted for. The rescue folks and Clackamas County Sheriff's office obliged them, and gave only limited identifications saying they were all from the "Portland area."

When people get into trouble on the mountain, (or anywhere else, for that matter,) they are not seeking the attention of the news media and extraneous do-gooders.

More information will come out as the ill-fated climbing party puts some distance between their ordeal and their ordinary lives.

A majority of the people in my school knew of her involvement in this incident during the weekend. This was most likely because our school released a make-shift newsletter to which was emailed to registered recipients. So people who checked their email got the inside scoop. The email was sent to my mom at work who works weekdays only. So thanks for the information. Both reasonings are right in a way...
